Lucasi Hybrid Shaft O F

Need to know how Lucasi made the ferrule landing, did they use the Predator design where they created a shoulder at the end of the shaft and placed an extremely thin ferrule on the end or did they design a tenon on the end, also, can someone say if Lucasi has a hollow end shaft with the foam that serves only to keep trash out of the shaft end?

the lucasi shaft is totally different than predator's design. the predator has a hollow bore in the tip end of the shaft with a short 6/10" sleeved, capped ferrule made with some lightweight material called maxlite (formerly titan). the lucasi design has no hollow sections, the secret is in the ferrule tenon, which is a straight thru design. the maple tenon is turned pretty thin, about 3/16". then a sleeve of lightweight wood (i believe it is basswood) is put over that, bringing the "tenon" now to the typical 5/16". then over this is put the ferrule, which is also a lightweight material like predator, called XTC. The ferrule is 7/8" in length on the normal flexpoints, and about 1/2" on the slims.

the predator is lower deflection than the lucasi, as the hollow bore is more effective in removing weight from the shaft. lucasi hits real nice though, and the LD is still pretty good.

hope this helps

Similar to a 314 1st Generation

The Hybrid shaft hits very similar to a 1st generation predator 314. Not as stiff as the 2nd gen but a very nice feel. If anyone is interested in a Hybrid shaft let me know, I have a dealership with Lucasi & can get some excellent deals on their products.

i wouldn't compare the hit of the hybrid to the predator at all, 1st or 2nd gen. predator has the hollow section which totally changes things. hybrid feels pretty close to a regular maple shaft, being totally solid in construction. to me, it is stiffer and hits harder than the preds. deflection-wise, about halfway between a pred and a regular shaft.

That is probably quite accurate. Of course each individual will view the hit differently. To me there is a fairly big difference between the 1st & 2nd gen predators & I think the Hybrid is "similar" to the 1st gen but you are correct in it is not the same. I can't agree that it is stiffer then a predator though. But again each individual will get their own feed back & feel from something.

the 1st gen preds seemed very whippy to me....the 2nd gens are stiffer and hybrid is more similar to that i felt in terms of stiffness. i guess due to the hollow design, i never found anything that hit quite like a predator.

you're right though, there's some manufacturing variance as well as wood variance from shaft to shaft. different tips can also change things a lot. and of course what i consider whippy, you might consider stiff, etc. etc.

if you're not obsessive about having the absolutely lowest deflecting shaft and are looking for a traditional hit, the hybrid is a very good compromise i think, i like it.

I appreciate your help; your narrative was excellent on the shaft.
I have 314 second gen, Predator and a Lucasi hybrid, just purchased a Ted Harris cue and I plan on having the Lucasi shaft converted to a Radial Pin female thread to fit the Ted Harris male radial pin, also plan on having an Ivory ferrule installed and hence I needed to understand the ferrule design of the Lucasi. The Lucasi hybrid plays as good for me as the Predator. Technology works: Just fickle about chalk on my ferrule.

I know it's not traditional blue & can show up on cloth a bit more but I also hate the dirty ferrule & hands caused by blue chalk. You can try the light grey color chalk and it won't be noticable on your ferrule or hands. I use the Masters chalk in this color. Unfortunatly my only gripe is you cannot purchase it in bulk where as you can in Blue & Green.

changing the ferrule to ivory will kill the low deflection performance. at that point i think it will deflect like a regular shaft. i'm not that experienced with ivory, but usually ivory ferrules are capped for strength. not sure if doing a thru ferrule with ivory will hold up or not....

i second the grey masters, it keeps things nice and clean.
