Lucasi vs. Meucci vs. McDermott

Interesting. You don't hear nearly as much about Pechauer. I checked out their website and their cue line is handsome indeed. Do you happen to know if all their cues are made in Green Bay, or do they possibly have any models manufactured to their specs offshore and imported?

Pechauer is the best cue nobody has heard about. I believe they rival Schon's in quality for 2/3 of the price. All made in Green Bay.

For me, having a cheap McD with an I2 was a good alternative to having a cue that hit about the same or a bit better for 2 or 3 times the price.

I would buy a Meucci Originals pre-dot used or a D-Series McDermott used. Either can be found within your budget. In my opinion, Meucci has not improved since the "Originals" days. McDermott still makes a fine product and old or new, you will get a good personal player.

I have an old Meucci Sneeky Pete with 2 full original pre dot shafts. Everything is straight and looks new (but for the patina on the shafts). It plays as well as it did when Bob made it in 1980. Find a better player than that for $275 delivered!

I stumbled upon a McDermott d-9 today in a pawn shop, rolls straight, no nicks or dents, complete with a leather wrap. I played with it for a couple hours and am pleasantly surprised at the way it plays.

Just had to chip in on this:

In my early day's there where 3 "camps" , Huebler, McDermott and Meucci.
I never got over the McD phase after my first D1 where the others where looking at the Meuccis and the Hublers.
This was in the 80s and the Meuccis where as always made with a wrap which was covered with clear coat..... ? I never understood this part and never bothered to try one. I needed some grip on the cue which was actually taking care of the humidity in my hands.

Getting back to pool some years ago I did buy a new McD. The cue was nice hitting and I was even buying another one of my old favorite brand- a M2-07.
My McD cues have all the 3/8x10 joint but the lather grip has a different feel to it then the old D-22 or 23 I have. The old D series have still a grip in LEATHER and not the "look-like-leather" and is in mint condition. The M2-07 has something which might be leather grip, but feels tacky griping it.

This is however not as bad as some of the Meuccies I have repaired which seems to be made of recycled plastic trash cans and the like.... ! I have currently a old "gambler" cue (playing cards on the butt section) which has lost it's butt cap for repair and the wood inside it feels like - well - balsa or something look a like. I'm not sure, but it do for sure not feel like decent wood...

I would not touch a Meucci with a plier even if I got one for free, but that is just my old time biased opinion.

In respect of the other brands you have mentioned, there is a lot made down in China which is "US made" on the surface, but this do not always mean it's crap. Even McD has a line made down there if I'm not mistaking and I guess it's not a surprise that some of the Pred's are made down there.

I have some of the early Furys and "Balabushkas" (Adam cues) from China and they do for sure not even get 50% close to my old D series McD which is now close to 20 odd years old now...

I came over my old D series at Ebay when I started playing (again), and it's still the cue I grab when ever I feel like using something "real".

I guess it's all about taste, but I doubt that you would find a Chinese "collectable" in a couple of years if it has not a very distinct design which is/was unique to a certain series.

Just my "grey hear" experience - and most likely not the most positive one :o

Why not get one of the OB cues which is actually made "all in the US" ?

I have never played with a Lucasi but have played with quite a few cues in that range as far as Meucci, Mali, Players, and McDermotts, and my preference is a McDermott. For a production cue they are hard to beat and there customer service is great, well thats my 2 cents anyway.

I'll add to the McDermott side. IMHO they are the best sub-$300 cues out there (not based on MSRP, but what you can get them for, which if you search around can be 40-45% off MSRP). We have 4 of them in our house and love them all. I've played with other folks Lucassi's, Meucci's, Adam's, Player's, Fury's, etc and I prefer the feel of the hit, the taper, the balance, etc of my McD's.

Another silly thing I love with McD's is the bumper. I have a habit of bouncing my cue on the bumper while waiting for my shot. I hate the thin bumpers a lot of cues have now a days. But my nice thick McD bumper makes me happy. I swear what I hate most about having to pickup a house cue is they are almost always missing the bumper...

Just curious here. I have owned and shot many games with these brands. I remember back in the late 80's - 90's Meuccis and McDs were the shit when it came to "production" cues. I however now fully like Lucasi's hit and performance over the Meucci's. Meucci and McD tend to run a little more $ also. What do you all think. I am also wondering if some of the Lucasi models might become collectible over the years like some of the classic Meucci models have. Even though the market blows right now for this hobby and sport. I just thought I would give some discussion to the smaller guys.

Which Lucasi model did you shoot with? Only the LE-27 comes with a specially made 8-piece shaft.

Ok lets streamline it then. How about a $200.00 to $300.00 model on each maker. Which would you purchase as well as use as a daily shooter?
My shooter became a bottom end McDermott butt worth maybe $40 w an OB Classic shaft. It’s light and I love the feel.
I’ve often believed the shaft, tip and ferrule are most important. I’ve only been playing 60 years, so maybe I learn something in the next 20 years.

I picked up a Meucci a year ago. The quality is excellent and it plays as good or better than any cue I've owned. New management I suspect.

Interesting. You don't hear nearly as much about Pechauer. I checked out their website and their cue line is handsome indeed. Do you happen to know if all their cues are made in Green Bay, or do they possibly have any models manufactured to their specs offshore and imported?
Just saw the date....Holy Thread resurrection, Batman! I feel a little silly!

Pechauer, IMO, are a pretty big step up in quality over the cues mentioned...More closely comparable to a Mezz, Joss, or Shon. I would guess they are smaller in production scale than the others, as they make everything about their cue, including machining their own hardware, and harvesting and their own wood for the cues from their property. EVERYTHING about every one of their cues is made in Wisconsin.

They have a JP series that can be had new in the $350 range, and a pro series that is more in the $750 range. All of their cues have a lifetime warranty that I assume is on par with McDermott's. I bought a mid '90's Pech of the Bay, and it was in rough shape. Sent it in to the shop and not only did they refinish and repair the many dings and dents for $300, but put a new wrap, and sent it back with a complete set of weight bolts...all free of charge.
