Luck vs Skill Percentage - What Do You Think?

You want to give your opponent bih to see how they play? That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard

I'd rather bet how long it takes my opponent to fail.

I practiced enough to know how long I can go without failing.

The art of the great dump.

Sometimes the opening leave is obvious, and if they miss position on that first shot.

Then I enjoy the "drama"

I understand now. My reading comprehension is piss poor.
I too enjoy the drama, as you say.

I have always said there are 2 ss in Guess and 2 ss in miss
If you dont have a System You are Guessing and even if you guess correctly chances are next time you wont
When I give people lessons I respectfully tell them I dont care if you take shots /kicks /banks by feel if you want to be Consistent YOU NEED A SYSTEM IMHO
I was teaching a guy that said he banks by feel. he is 2years in. excellent for that amount of time but still low to mid 500s. I pointed to the best player in the room who has been playing at a beat the ghost level for over 20years and said, "that guy can bank by feel, but only bc he spent years apolying systems first".

It takes a lot of experience to just see the lines. some days i do, but i still confirm with one ofthe handy systems I know.

Been polynomialing the systems by feel for years. They now go a hair more than not unless I push it.

While playing in a tournament at Starcher's Billiards in Akron, Ohio, I was matched up against a player that was far below my skill level. He missed a lot of shots, but practically every time he missed, the cue ball would be buried and I'd have to kick. He wasn't playing me safe. He didn't do it intentionally. It just happened. He ended up winning the match. Sometimes luck is a huge factor.
Why do you think those leaves were luck...? He was a weak potter and clearly had poor CB control. He also played with too much pace and risked burying the CB. The results of badly played shots, isn't luck. It's what potentially happens when you don't have a clue on what you're doing.

Would it have been good luck for you if every shot he missed had pocket weight, hung in the jaws, and you had clean line of sight and easy shape to the next ball...?

It's all relative... Luck isn't a thing. A player's method either introduces additional variables, or it eliminates them. Bangers tend to be more 'lucky' because they haven't figured out yet that their odds of success increase when they stop being bangers.

Reeks of a cold call sales pitch. Do you offer car detailing as well...?

I dropped $300 one day trying to reel some action and it backfired on me. The fish got away and took my bait lol. A buddy was talking about getting his car washed and waxed and I said I'd do it for $100 ( back in the 70"s) and I did his car for him. The next thing I knew I had 2 more cars to do and made up the $300 loss. Lesson learned was don't feed your bait to the fish.

Considering you can get a wash and wax for less than a $100 now 50 years later, sounds like u let a pool fish off the hook but caught yourself 3 carwash whales.

Soooo...if a player makes a 2 rail kick and cuts the 8-ball into the side pocket which was 12 inches from the pocket...is it luck or skill? We re-setup the shot and it took him 23 tries to make it again. Is 5% a luck shot or is 10%? Where is the line? I'm thinking anything less than 10% is just luck. Thoughts?
It is both luck and skill, same as when a golfer makes a 40ft putt, however the more you practice the luckier you get.

I once had a conversation with a lady that had been attending a philosophy class. The subject of luck came up. She told me she didn't believe in luck. I explained to her that some things happen by chance and humans the world over choose to call it luck. She told me she didn't believe in chance, so I told her that if she didn't believe in chance, her only alternative would be to believe that we're all just puppets, dancing to the whims of the puppet master. She said she didn't believe that either, so I said to her ''then you don't believe in anything".

A beaut of a hustler I played fairly often played that way in tournameents all the time. He'd gladly offer up his 570FR when making matches yet strung together 3 and 4 rack runs on me in a ho hum manner. Just a master of the good miss. You always felt u were in the set with him and lost because of either luck or a mistake here n there u shiuldnt have made. Funny how he only had bad days on my bad days. His play style is best described as "I bet you can't run out". Tricky layout? Have as many turns as u want. Road map? I guess I'll clear this one....maybe leave u in a 'fluke' hook. Beautician. He passed cpl months ago and willbe missed. I'd venture a guess he was really around 700FR. Can't tell tho bc I wasn't good enough for him to have to show me his top speed. He just won our races to 15 about 15-12, 15-13 at about a 2:1 clip....way higher than that margin would suggest. And Im a favorite against real 570s.

Loved the show. Me and boogieman would get along.
I used that hustle also before I became a Christian.

That's one hell of a leap. So because I don't believe the actions of someone at the table produces random chance. I'm therefore being controlled by, what I would assume, is some greater entity and plodding along in my day for their amusement..?

You must be tons of fun at dinner parties...lol

I didn't say that. You might want to read it again.

Either you believe in chance, or you believe in a "puppet master" (aka: controlling entity) making our actions for us.

Maybe you need to reread it yourself.

I believe in luck. You're saying you don't believe in either. What then do you believe?
