Lucky Guy

Congratulations for stepping up. You did well. It's hard to sit around for months then go straight into a tournament. After a long break, usually my first couple of matches are nerve racking. A finish like this will get you motivated, I'm sure.

For those of us that don't play 1P, what is "Chicago-style"? I'm assuming a difference in approach, but no idea.

Someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Chicago-style 1p places an emphasis on moving and lock-up safeties, in contrast to what would be considered a more aggressive trigger-happy style like the one Ronnie Allen originated and that a lot of current players use. Modern examples of players that exhibit this new-school aggressive style would be Scott Frost, Danny Smith and Tony Chohan.

Chicago style is when they cook it deep dish, and then they put the cheese on the bottom with a chunky tomoato sauce on top.

Here in NY, we only like to eat it if you can fold it in half.

Wait, what were we talking about...?

Yes, you are lucky to have a wife that supports your passion for pool. Short of being married to a pro female player, not sure anyone has posted better examples than you.

My wife is similar in supporting my passion, but slightly different....when I play pool, she goes shopping for shoes she doesn't need.....

lol. Could be worse, might be jewelry :-)

You are lucky indeed. There's an older couple that generally come in on the weekend where I play. They rent a table & play all day together. They both play very well.

I always find myself admiring them as they enjoy the game & each other. He's a lucky guy, so are you.

I think, for moi, that Gail doesn't play pool is a plus. Udder than that, yes I is lucky.

You are a lucky guy. I am too but my wife will not set foot in a poolroom. She has no problem with me playing whenever I like though. Had a little run at the Expo this year and she surprised me by showing up for my third and fourth match in the seniors. First time she has ever seen me play and she met a lot of my pool friends. Glad you have a wife that let's you enjoy your life and it's nice you enjoy things together.

That's pretty cool, that she went to the Expo to see you play. I believe taking an interest in your significant other's interests is key to mutual happiness... though I'm not particularly upset that "Nashville," one of her favorite shows, just got cancelled :-o

My wife supports my pool playing but she won't sweat the matches. Maybe that's good.

Thanks Lou for the great story, I'm from the Chicago area and love to hear about our places and players.

You're welcome, PH. Red Shoes is a tremendous pool room. You guys are lucky up there to have it up there.

I was there and saw you when you were playing piggy. You sir have a great game!!!

Thank you, sir. I knew I was in trouble though when Piggy hit a double bank on me and started pimp rolling around the table :-)

Thanks, Tate. Yes, it does kinda get the juices pumping. The rail broke out into applause after the final ball dropped and we shook hands. So it was all pretty cool.

Gideon, I'm sure you've heard the expression "pinch and squeeze." That sums it up. Chicago style emphasizes smaller ball movements, with greater emphasis on speed control. Fewer balls get moved around and players attempt to control the layout of the table more so than say West Coast, power 1pocket style. There's less splashing into the rack and more dribbling one ball to near your pocket and hiding the CB

It's the difference between a boa constrictor and a cobra.

Pretty much on the mark.
