Luther Lasiter's Cue

In the late 60's Luther Lassiter was using a cue with a $20 gold coin inlay. I think it was a Rambow with a red ferule.

Whatever happened to it?

I don't think it was a $20.00. gold piece. It was small more likely a $5.00. I saw it a few times and it was pretty crudely done. He may have done it himself.

I don't know anything about the cues Luther had or what happened to them but in a conversation with him at the ELKS CLUB 14.1 Championships in LA in 1972 he told me the glare off the white ferrule was starting to bother him. He said he either had to change the coloration or wear a visor to cut down on the glare. He said he didn't like visors or hats much. I asked him why not a black ferrule and he said the red ferrule was better at sighting then the black so make of this as you will.

Regarding the cues of Lassiter, there are many who think there was one elusive one, but having seen him in person in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, I can tell you he used different cues over time. For example, here he is with a dark-ferrule cue, hard to tell if it's red or black. This would have been a bit later in his career.

I was watching a match with DiLiberto doing commentary. He knew Lassiter well and said he applied red lipstick to the ferrule. He also said Lassiter had his heart broken by a woman at a young age and left women alone after that, focusing on pool.

we have one of wimpy's first cues at colonial cues in eliz city,nc. we have it on display in a custom made enclosure hanging on the wall. wimpy's old poolroom upstairs in downtown has his 1970 US Open trophy on display, as well as a meucci that has his name engraved in it. friends of mine have one of his world c'ship trophies. Wimpy always gave away his trophies, and thats how my friends ended up with it. they have been offered a lot of money for it, but will not sell it.

Great post. Can you take a picture of the first cue you're talking about and post it here? There are a lot of Lassiter fans who would like to see his early cues.

All the best,
WW
