Luther Lassiter vs Jack Breit

Thanks. Interesting commentary from Mosconi at the end regarding Jersey Red's safety and the referee.

Yeah, this takes me way back. Saw Jersey Red, who often hung with John Ervolino, play a few times. He was a tough out.

Yep, I believe Mosconi was right. The ref is not supposed to re-rack the balls. This is not the only time a ref goofed.

All the best,
WW

Thanks for this! Jersey Red had a great stroke- reminds me a bit of Sigel - Even though there was little instruction back then all the greats stroked straight through the cue ball and stayed down on every shot - that would translate to very very good pool playing in any era.

He is also right about Jersey Red playing the wrong safety. The correct safety there is pocket the ball and then shoot the ball just above the corner ball and send an object ball to the foot rail while sticking the cue tall in the rack. That shot puts the opponent on the defensive.

The current rules allow a rerack if the 14 balls have not been disturbed and the 15th ball needs to spot. If that is not allowed then you run into these scenarios:

The rack has been placed a little high. The 15th ball needs to be spotted. It does not fit on the spot. It must be placed behind the rack.

The rack has been placed a little low. The 15th ball fits on the spot but there is a 1/4-inch gap to the two balls next to it. The shooter complains.

I don't believe that the rules at the time (1969) mentioned reracking, either for or against.

He plays with black ferrule because he has figured it out long before us all. The cueball is white therefore you need to contrast that by a different color and what other color that contrast more than black which is 100% the opposite of white.

I never understood white ferrules to be honest, same color as the cueball. Does not make sense at all!

I'm glad I play with Revo black vault the original, I also ordered 11.8 revo with black vault from seyberts, and its so good playing with black vault/ferrule.

Not sure this has been posted before. Lassiter vs Breit. Not much video out there on Jack Breit. Also, this one shows Luther playing with that strange black ferrule. Enjoy! ...
I wonder if ABC/Disney/ESPN have the full match somewhere in their vaults. I tried looking once but it was hard and it looked like if I did find something they wanted great, steaming piles of money to see it, like I'd have to be a production company. Does anyone here know somebody there?

Warner Bros has some old films of Greenleaf that I've been trying to locate. Like your experience, they are rotting in a vault somewhere and it's impossible to get anyone to bother looking for them, let alone digitizing the films for public release.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Wimpy played with a red ferrule for awhile.

He said as he got older he needed a better visual.

I remember that too. I sort of recall an orangish color, maybe when he was playing in Sacramento.

I actually got to watch Lassiter play once.

He came to Oakland, California, probably mid 70’s with Joe Bslsis, Irving Crane and a fourth champion whom I cannot identify with certainty.

I went with a college buddy ftom USF and found the room in a neighborhood across the Bay ftom SF we did not frequent. They warmed up with each other playing 1pocket and it was basically 8 and out, 8 and out, 8 and out…

No clue how high a level of play I was seeing, they made it look like it was nothing.

I was young in 1966 and I got to watch Luther Lassiter in competition with Cisero Murphy just after Christmas at the Golden Cue in Queens, NY. The games were amazing but so was the side action games played by some great players after the tournament games. Much more money to be made in the non-tournament 9 ball games than in the tournament. Wimpy was an amazing player.

The fourth guy might have been Willie Elder who was Mosconi's road man.

I have wondered that myself. I've also wondered if the Wide World of Sports tape of Lassiter vs. Eddie Taylor, something like 1965 or 1966 still exists somewhere. Still remember watching it back then; it got me into pool. Lassiter won.

Yep, believe he painted a regular white ferrule with red fingernail polish. Not sure about the black ferrule material.

I heard Danny DiLiberto talk about that once. He roomed with Wimpy on the road for a while. I thought he said it was red lipstick. If anybody runs into Danny at an event maybe they could ask him.

This match was the finals of the first pro tournament I ever saw. This was the tournament where Dick Baertsch beat Joe Balsis by a record margin of 150 to minus 13. Here are the results from Charlie Ursitti's records.
