how did we end up with a standard cue length of 58"?

most standards evolve from something: lumber sizes, disk drive form factors, equipment rack mounts, etc.

has a lot of experimentation been done with other lengths? is 58 Really the best?

I don't know what year the 58" became standard but I would be willing to bet a few bucks that a few of the larger cue companies got together and made 58" so they only had to make one size. Of coarse they would make you a CUSTOM length for a price. If you follow the money you will be right a good percentage of the time. Johnnyt
