Magic Eraser - Use Water, Not Alcohol!

Thought I would pass along this experience. I got a stain on my ferrule from using Tiger's Brown Liquid Burnisher. I had used non-stick masking tape but the brown stuff soaked through - guess I got a little reckless with it. So out comes the Magic Eraser, and for this big job I thought I'd use pure grain alcohol. The ME+alcohol lightened the stain couldn't get rid of it. So I thought I'd try water, like the ME instructions say. ME+water worked much better - the stain was gone in a few seconds.

Magic Eraser is really kind of a miracle product. It also works great on getting the embedded blue chalk out of the shaft.

but if you use water you have to dry and burnish the shaft right after

I have never used magic Eraser.with that said i would imagine the chemical content in ME is made so it works with water..it's like using laquer thinner to clean up after painting with Latex or water to clean up after using oil based paints.the previous examples work against each other... like oil floating in water..i hope these examples help to clarify it....

Water+ME = Raised grain... much much more than alcohol.

More sanding... not good!

The first time I used Magic Eraser to clean the shaft I really overdid it with water, and the shaft got pretty soaked. Live and learn. The ME should just be damp - ring all the water you can out of it before applying it to the shaft.

The last time I did it I probably did use Q Smooth papers to sand it lightly after finishing. But once a year I'm not worried about.

I'm no cue maker or expert on wood or shafts but I am a real nut for having the ferrule and shaft spic and span clean so I have tried everything ever mentioned on any of these forums and some more ideas of my own!

I just barely dampen the ME and then after wiping the offending dirt off the shaft or ferrule I wipe it dry with a good quality paper towel. Hold the towel on the wood so it will wick the water out. It works great for me. Then just burnish or use some Slip Stic or other product of your preference.

I think it would be a very bad idea to use the ME on the finished part of the shaft or on the butt. It would probably remove the finish.

How about Predator?

I'm wondering if this is also safe for a Predator shaft. I heard they use a water soluable glue? Anybody Know?

Not sure if you can use ME on Predator or other laminated shafts. All I know is that it Magic Eraser with a couple of drops of regular rubbing alcohol works great. It will make the shaft look like it's brand new. Just don't become an addict and use it every week, or every month. I think using it two or three times a YEAR is ok. Anything more than that and you risk damaging your shaft IMO.

After using ME and burnishing/sanding, using Slipstic on the shaft is incredible. What a great product! Your shaft stays smooth as silk for weeks, and all you have to do after using it is wipe it quickly with a paper towel or cloth.

I've been using Magic Eraser and denatured alcohol for about a year on my Predators and have had zero problems. It works great. It is not a good idea to use water on a Predator and the company suggests 90% alcohol because it drys quickly without raising the grain. You don't need to soak the ME; just make it damp.

It's a neat product. It is actually insulation made of melamine foam. Someone discovered it's properties as a cleaning device and a new product was born. It cleans because the fibers are so microscopic they get' into the smallest crevice and clean out the dirt. The liquid acts to dissolve and carry away what the sponge gets out. I think the only place making it is Germany, that seems to be where it all comes from.

This website on shaft maintainence has a section on Magic Eraser + lots of other good information Go to "Cue facts and fiction" and then to "cue maintainence"

On my 314, I use rubbing alcohol once a week with a paper towel, and damp ME once a month or so. I burnish after the ME with Micro film very fine papers, like 2000 grit or so, very lightly.

I'll let you know if my shaft falls apart or warps. It's only $200, and so far, I've had nothing but a clean, smooth, good hitting shaft.

Can you get Magic Eraser at walmart?

What is slipstick?

I have been wondering if there is a polish to use on the shaft that will seal the pores and prevent future dirt from accumulating. Thanks for any suggestions.

I personnaly use Zinsser Bullseye Sanding Sealer thinned with denatured alcohol (BLACKHEARTCUES helped me to find a good sealer, I would also like to thank Mike Webb)

Hope it helps!

Thanks for any suggestions.[/QUOTE When i bought my cues the latest which is a Hightower Custom as is pictured in my avatar i put a coat of wax on it.there was a pool cue wax marketed but i compared another product and it LOOKED identical.this product i use is Kiwi Wet Pruf for shoes(purchased at Walmart in shoe dept)..after your cue is clean apply a very very very thin coat of wax on it..remember your not waxing a car..once this is alowed to dry for at least 5 mins..i buff out by using a t-shirt or well used/washed cotton towel ..use light pressure to buff..i have been doing this about once per week for the past 2 years ..my cues look like new like they are not even played and i play about 2 hours a day everyday on my home table..if you try this remember the whole secret is to use a very thin coat of wax..of course never eat and grab your cue without washing your hands first.....good luck..:)

Do not get water anywhere near the Predator shafts.

Magic Eraser

I usually buy a box of Magic Erasers at Costco. Comes in boxes of ten or twelve if I remember correctly. Walmart sells them too, if you just want one or two.
