"magic" rack?

I like whoever is down in the match gets the break.... Gives you a fighting chance to make comebacks and if you get skunked hell ya can't complain you broke likely every game except maybe the 1st one..... If you catch the guy it's his break that game and you will have someone behind that breaks the next game.....

Shooting after the break without making a ball should only be used in 14.1 we call it 15.1 run 15, rerack and smash em and keep going.... Mosconi's run will be dust in weeks.....

I find it amazing that 9 ball has been around for a very, very long time in tournaments and gambling, played by many legends of the game for amazing sums of $ & no one ever felt the need to change anything involving the break, no whining over the rack, no break boxes, no if the nine goes in the bottom 2 pockets it's spotted, no alternating break, no magic racks, no whining about any of it & in the last 15 years all of this crap has come out with talks of being fair, better matches to watch, blah, blah, blah. Pool has always been a game where you stay at the table until your inning is over & that is when you miss, foul or play a safety, period, end of discussion. Players accepted it & it makes for better pool, packages being strung and has always been a huge part of the psychology of the game, can you keep the heat on at the table or maintain your composure when strapped in the electric chair waiting for a chance. Lastly do you have the nads & the heart & most of all the talent that when you finally get a shot after somebody just strung 4 or 5 on you to come to the table and fire back, that's pool, the way it always was, also the way it should be. Everything else is a byproduct of the everybody gets a chance, everybody gets a trophy generation. Holding serve in an alternate break format isn't pressure & doesn't show the mettle of a player. Being stuck 5 dimes at 3:00 in the morning after 36 straight hours of play & having a guy put a package on you & then when you get your chance you rise to the occasion & snap it right back in his face, that shows a players mettle, all the true greats have been there & done it, those are pool players. Today's players are soft. It's not about everybody having a "fair" chance under optimum conditions. It's about being able to respond and fire back when you get your chance, even when you're tired & feel like you have sand ground in your eyes, that takes not only talent, but guts & when this sport was respected & revered that's what it was about, having both & having no need for a crying towel if everything isn't perfect. I'm sure some will say its not fair, those days are over, pool is changing, yada, yada, yada. My response to those people is that you should go down to Walmart, dresses are on sale, I think they sell trophies there too. Just grow a set, quit whining and play

Very well said!!

But...

With the dissemination of knowledge that occurs as time passes, it became apparent that some people were playing games with the rack and manipulating it.

It stands to reason that all the rack smarts did not just appear one day, people decided they would give what they get.

Well hell, why stick with 9ball at all ?
Cuz its better for tv?
What tv?

Short races are allegedly too short to say who's a better player, so instead of a longer game, just play a bazillion short games in a row? What's the point? Who had more red bull in their system?

What pro can't hit 9 balls in a row, when there are only nine balls on the entire table and theyre spread out nice and open ? What pro can't combo the 2 into the 9 for a win, completely negating the other six balls anyway?

The rack is so dam critical because the game is so dam short. Why not forget the quick-game-for-a- quick-buck mentality and play something that requires more than one simple shot at any given time for the win.

It's like flipping a coin; with one simple toss its all over in an instant.
But that's not good enough so let's flip the coin 100 times.

Magic rack, nine-ball on the spot, and most of the problems people are complaining about go away.

It's relatively straightforward to make a ball, but as that ball is the one-ball it keeps the chance element of getting a shot on the two. If that's still too easy, just use a break box like they did at last year's Mosconi. Problem solved.

I like the idea of whichever player is behind breaking, although I'm not sure how it would play out at higher levels.

...do a break rotation where if you break 3 times in a row, next break is the opponents. If they lose, you get the break again for 3 times max, if they win, they can break up to 3 times.

I am starting to like this idea, its like having the serve in tennis.
