Make 1 ball on the 9 ball break

There are basically two balls that can be made consistently on the break in 9 ball. They are the wing ball and the one ball. The problem is most tables will not allow a tight enough rack to make the wing ball no matter how you break.

So the next best option is to make the one ball. If the one ball is going high or low how do you adjust to make it?

Do you hit lower on the cue ball to make the one ball go lower and higher to make the one ball go higher? I've also heard that you could cut the one ball to make it go higher.

The 1 is not super predictable. If you cut it slightly and put a little follow on the cueball, it will help to pull it towards the side...... but it is dependant on alot of things about the table in question.
As far as reading racks, especially 9 ball racks...... buy Joe Tuckers Racking Secrets dvd. He goes into a good explaination about gaps in the rack, what they mean.... and how to use them to your benefit. Ive bought tons of tapes over the years, from Buddy Hall and Mike Sigel to Bob Byrne......... and none have had anything as useful as Joes information.
Pick it up, you wont regret it. :D

Definately gonna grab the Racking Secrets. I've been learning more and more to read the gaps and small nuances of the racks better to determine what side to break from, what type of english, etc.

break

I can get some movement on the one but I am more consisent making the corner or wing ball about 90% of the time depending on the table speed. just my experience.

i find the wing fairly easy to make most of the time but the one seems harder to make it will go twords the side and sometimes go in and if not it will end up near the corner...i will sometimes shoot from the center of the table with high center cueball and i make the nine like that ...of course its not often but its easier to make it that way for me for some reason

Change....

I used to break and try to pocket the one ball. My coach recommended changing to not try that.

His point is the one is the only ball you know where it is, so break to make a wing ball, and position to make the one after the break.

My coach, Woody here on AZ. He is a BCA instructor. He has good points and I always try to listen because he often brings things up that you may not have thought of previously.

So if you think about it, I think he is right. Then you can adjust speed to affect the pocketing of the wing balls.

I hit them about 60% speed to try to make the wing, then adjust from there.

Thats my help for today,

Ken

You can't tell me you guys seriously go and look at every little gap of every rack. You know how long that would take. Never seen any player do that except for when there is big money on the line.

BTW I have read Joe Tucker's Racking Secrets. It works alright. I actually use the first break to tell me where the wing ball's going and then adjust from there. Most people will rack the same every time. But if the wing ball is going way high and you are breaking hard from the rail then you can't adjust any further. Sometimes you just cannot make the wing ball. It depends on the table and the racker.
