when making a ferrule from solid rod

1) do you drill or bore? if boring what ID?

2) for 7/8 long SABER-T ferrule how thick should I let the cap?

3) do i need a special tap or will my normal 5/16 x18 taps i get from my SNAP ON dealer work?

1) Drilling is all that's needed.

2) I always leave a .250 cap on any capped ferrule

3) Your taps are what's needed.

For 5/16-18 thread use a "F" drill or .257 drill. Just curious, but is the tenon already threaded?...JER

Drilling Is enough as mentioned. Common drills for 5/16-18 & 5/16-14 are "F", "G", and "H", and they each have a little different fit as far as snugness is concerned. I do it both ways depending on how I feel at the time, and what I'm working on, but sometimes I face, underdrill, and slightly bore to size. On a capped ferrule I prefer something closer to a bottoming tap, with a shorter taper on the end of It. This allows the end of the tenon to go up closer to the cap in the ferrule to bottom the tenon out. It's possible to taper the end of the tenon to bottom though If you don't have a bottoming tap. I have done that before, but not My preferred method. The most common thread size for ferrules is 5/16-18 as mentioned, but there are other sizes out there, so always possible to run accross on of those instead.:) Greg

I like to use an endmill to get the bottom of the hole square. 2 taps, one regular and one bottoming tap. It's overkill, but I like the threads to go full length.

I agree...JER

I have one that I use sometimes, but usually I just square the inside face & the corners with My boring tool. I do use the 2 taps though, and chase with the bottom tap. I like them to go full length too.;)

JER I'am not shore if it's threaded all ready or not. The current ferrules not damaged in any way. They played with a cue that had a SABER-T ferrule and liked it. I'am just trying to get every thing i need on hand for the repair before starting.

SHELDON Perfection is not considered over kill in my book by any means

And thanks to all that replied with the knowledge you guys armed my with this should make this repair go smoothly

Let me get this straight, the ferrule you're changing, isn't broken or cracked!!!!!!!! And you're changing it to a SABER-T, because you played with ANOTHER Q with one of these ferrules & liked that Q. And you've never changed a ferrule before. And you don't know if the shaft under the existing ferrule is threaded. This looks more like a disaster than a repair. Sorry, but on futher thought, I think you should leave it as is or take it to a repairman...JER

1st its not my cue i like the way linen based ferrules play. My customer wants a SABER-T so i'am going to give him what he wants.

And I have a lathe and have replaced ferrules. I just never made my own from a solid rod before. If i could find prethreaded SABER-t ferrules I would just buy it that way.

I know i'am not as expericed as you guys thats why I ask the question.
Just trying to shorten the learning curve.

It's hard to blindly give instruction, unless we know things like your experience, machinery & more about the Q in question. I am more than willing to help anyone, but it was like pulling this info out of you in tiny pieces. For example my advice about what was needed to make this change, might have been different, if I had known from the begining that you didn't even cut the old ferrule off yet. Not many production Qs & even less of the cheap imports, have threaded ferules. If the tenon is not threaded now you will have to turn it to the proper size & cut threads on it also. Have you given any thought as to how you will do that? My advice to you, with your limited knowledge, is to NOT THREAD THE TENON OR FERRULE & USE A FERRULE WITH A HOLE ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH . That is probably what is on that Q now. I think you should practice on your own Q , before you put someone elses Q, in jepardy...JER

Buy a 1/4 drill with a drill stop. Leave at least .187 for the cap.
But an 1/4 bottoming end mill with a drill stop.
Use 2 taps.
