Making an offer on Gold Crown III

I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and make an offer on an 8' Gold Crown III. The problem is that it's gonna cost me about $1k to get it moved to my house. This does not include the setup or new cloth. I'll be doing that in about a month once my new floors are put in.

I'd like to make an offer on the table but am having a hard time settling on a number. I don't want to completely low ball the guy and seem like a jerk but, I do want to try and get the best price I can.

The current asking price is $2,500 and it's been listed for about 2 weeks. Is $1,500 too low of an opening offer or would $2,000 be more appropriate?

I really don't have much experience buying/selling tables and I know it can be dependent on the market. Hoping to get some guidance from others who have more experience.

If it's in real good shape I'd shoot for $2000 +/- $100. Based off the room it's in, they probably need it gone.

For reference, I paid $2200 for a 9ft, drop pocket, GC4 a few years back. It was in very good shape.

It does really look to be in good condition. I wish it wasn't so far, the cost to move is killing my budget.

There are a lot more options for 9ft tables but I'm afraid it might be a little too big for my space. The oversized 8 is perfect for me.

What size is your room?

It can’t hurt to start at $1500 just to get the negotiations going. I wouldn’t say $1500 is out of line as an opening offer, but anything less than that would not be a serious offer.

You can let them know that you have to take into account the $1000 to get it moved not to mention another $500+ to get it set up with new cloth. They can always counter with an offer, but I’d be surprised if you end up getting it for less than $2000 or so.

I have seen GC's going for everywhere from free to good home to four thousand. That table looks to have never been in a commercial environment. I would have thought that 2000-2500 was fair but with the recent climb in prices I might jump on the twenty-five hundred. There is a fair chance you will lose the table to another buyer while dickering over a couple hundred. That is a forever table, it will outlast you. Do you really care if it costs $3000 or $3500 in your home ready to play?

A sad story, I was looking at an old home on six acres in a perfect location for my home and business. I had negotiated until the price was below what I was willing to pay for it but the owners were still negotiating so I figured I would send one more offer and accept whatever they countered with even if they didn't go down any more. Somebody gave them full asking price while I was playing games mostly for craps and giggles.

I think this is a good way to go.

Is the seller in big city, rural area, or what? Is pool hot or cold in the area? Evaluate the demand in the seller's area.
What is market in your area?
Is the seller the type that understands negotiating? Folk's reactions are different,
Finally, determine how you will feel if you lose.
Act accordingly.
Good luck. Hope it works out.

It’s already been listed for two weeks, that’s a good sign. Additionally, people discriminating enough to look for a gold crown are more likely to be looking for a 9 footer, not an oversized 8, so that might also help. However, as others have said, there’s no telling how much longer this table might be around, so I would make contact with the seller ASAP.

Consider it might need new rubber also. Who will move it for you. Who will set it up? Might be a big hassle. Offer the $1500 and come up to $2000… really want it? ..just buy it and pay the bill. It’ll last you a lifetime.

Couldn't you have messaged the seller offering $1500 instead?
That was the plan but I wanted to see if 1500 would be considered too low to be a reasonable offer before I did it.
1500, worst thing is they say no. big deal.
That's my thought as well.

I messaged the seller to see if it was still available, I'm hoping to hear back.
How would you guys handle the logistics of making payment on a longer distance deal like this? Do I just need to suck it up and drive down there to hand him cash?

I paid $2,300 for my GC3 delivered and set up w/ new 860 cloth. Mine came from a billiard room that was going out of business in San Rafael Ca.
Since it was a table in service for such a long time at the pool room up there, it had quite a few scratches and was pretty rough. I took it apart and refinished the aprons so it looks almost like new at this point. Those old GC3's are really built well, you won't regret it.

I've got a guy that can do the move and I'll have him come back to do the setup after new floor is installed. It'll suck if it needs new rubber too.

I know he's the original owner, not sure how old it is.

Sucks yes but quality rubber will last for a long stretch. Once you are set up there are no costs to keep it running. You’ll have a world class table. It’s hard to buy a table from a distance. I’d want to see what I’m getting.
If the table is in excellent condition it’s worth it even if you pay a little more. There are no set prices. Decide the most you want to pay and go from there. Pool tables are condition based for its value.

Sounds like a fair price. Do the best you can to get it done. I sure miss mine. Bought new in 88, 9ft GC3 with gold 860
