FYI, I just posted a new video that gives advice on how to use eyeglasses more effectively when playing pool. I also discuss other vision correction options. Check it out:

Contents (with timestamp links):
0:00 - Intro
0:47 - Alternatives
1:57 - Adjusting Glasses
3:31 - New Glasses Advice
4:23 - Wrap Up

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

Near sighted here...but I did go with special pool glasses. My bride calls them my "geek glasses". They help..a lot. But now I've developed the age related vision problems of cataracts (not bad enough for lens replacement surgery yet). age related macular degeneration that I get injections in the eye for, and glaucoma, drops for treatment. But hey, at least I can blame my eyes...it's not easy to see the object ball spot, but I'll keep trying as longs as I'm able.

Nice video, Dr. Dave...thanks!

If they help you play better, I wouldn't care what people call or think about them.

I also plan to not let anything age-related in the future stop me from playing.

Thank you, and you're welcome. I aim to swerve (when I can see the balls clearly). :geek:

Great video, Dave. I wear glasses daily, but I would usually take them off while playing pool due to the rim block, and seem to get by decently without them. I've actually once snapped the nose pads trying to adjust them while down on my shot.

I do, however, wear them playing snooker. My eyes tend to get strained with the longer sightlines. Those Dennis Taylor-style glasses look goofy, but they sure seem to do the job well.

Thanks.

Do you use a lower stance when playing snooker as compared to pool?

As I demonstrate in the video, with proper adjustments, it is possible to get even small-lens glasses like mine to work fine.

I use the same stance for both, actually - traditional snooker stance. Chin resting on my cue at all times.

The next time I'm on a table, I'll give the video another watch and try fiddle around with a spare pair of glasses to see if it's to my liking. The lenses on mine are larger than yours, so I doubt I'll have any problems with it.

I was just wondering why you get "rim block" with pool but not with snooker, or did I misunderstand what you wrote?

Yeah, sorry. I should have phrased it better. I still do get rim block with snooker, but I would prefer the occasional block to having not wear glasses at all.

Good luck wit dat!

I have been wearing contacts for playing pool for about 6 years now.
I have an astigmatism and do wear bifocals.
They do amazing things with contacts these days.
My contacts are for distance, so while wearing them I do use reading glasses for close up
however they are perfect for playing pool.
Anything over about 10 inches from my line of sight is in perfect focus.
Best thing I ever did in regards to pool was getting contacts.

Yes they are a pain in the butt at first.
Persevere.
After a while popping them in or taking them out becomes second nature.
I do not mind wearing glasses as I only use contacts when I'm playing.

Great video Dave!

Timely article thanks Dave!

Just last week I received my custom billiards glasses from Curran (billiardglasses.com). I won't win any fashion contests but they aren't nearly as bad as the ones you show in the video.

The good news is I CAN SEE THE ENTIRE TABLE at all times with normal head position. I'm 51, and this is like a 10 year time machine for my eyes! :) I am so happy I took a chance and ordered them.

EDIT: And I believe this is my first post... :p

I know my playing level will most certainly go down with age-related "challenges," but I hope I can still enjoy the game until my dying days.

I am 56 and still constantly improving my game (with a long way to go). I plan to keep that trend going for as long as I can.

I know many people love contacts for playing pool. I have toric contact lenses (for astigmatism and distance) and I have used them effectively at times, but I always go back to my glasses, especially since I know how to adjust and wear them properly.

Thanks for the input.

I'm glad you liked it.

IMO, playing better pool is worth more than winning fashion contents.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

You're welcome Doc.
Love your inputs and refer to them all of the time.
You are a great ambassador for the game we all love.

Have you tried contacts?
Once again persevere.
Nothing to adjust when wearing contacts..
