hey guys i have read this a couple times but for some reason it has stuck with me and i have not stop thinking about it. i have even sat in the pool hall and not played at all, just sitting there thinking, observing and theroizing. but right now i would like to pick ur guys and girls brains, and see what u have made of this. k enough of that the thing i have been thinking about non-stop is that "when playing an opponent u have to play the table, that ur not playing ur opponent and that u win when u beat the table". im not really sure what to make of this, and intriqued to see how many other people have heard this and what they think of it. and if u havent heard this and this is your first time, what do u think about it now that u have heard it.. well let me know what you guys think... thanks david

this is more or less referring to being intimidated. for example, you're in a tourney and you draw johnny archer........as soon as you start sweating yourself because you're got to play "Johnny archer" you've lost already.

when you get to the table, look at the table and think about your shot. don't think "oh shit, this guy locked me up again. he plays way too jam up for me" or start making excuses like "that guys getting all the rolls".

when its your turn at the table, just think about your options, once you choose a shot, dedicate to it, like your life (or next meal for some :D ) depends on it.

that is what is meant by "play the table, not the opponent"

Pool is a sport where what your opponent is doing doesn't affect you. You do have to reply to what the other does but when its your turn its all you. What else? ice skating? gymnastics? real manly stuff.
I think that wht makes the great players great is that they will always be in position to win any game given any 1 shot.

In other words, type the whole words, instead of instant message babble speak. I think that was Jake's point. I could be wrong.

I shot a safety and the cue-ball stopped about 2inches from where I wanted it.

if you would have frozen her to another ball like you probably wanted, it wouldn't have mattered if she could kick or not.......... :D

sorry just starting shit. it is good to know someone's ability at times. although i think that the originial saying "play the table, not the player" refers to intimidation.

good post

VAP,

Intimidation is not an option for me. I follow the words of Bobby Clark the old Philadelpia Flyer Center Iceman. "You never win anything if your afraid to lose." You sure as hell don't learn anything if your afraid to lose. :p Thanks!

very true!!

Sometimes I do let my opponent affect me. Especially if they are someone I really want to beat. The times where I have played my best are the times I play the table and not my opponent. I look at the table as one big puzzle. It's not a matter of if I run out, but how I leave the balls for my opponent. This is how I view playing the table. Now, if I could figure out how to focus this way on all my games then I might be a decent shot, lmao.

Personally, I think it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. There are times when "playing Brunswick" is the only way to go. My opponent is unknown or appears proficient in all aspects of the game so there's little to exploit. However, I will take notes of mistakes he made and if I find a pattern I could exploit, I will do so. On the whole, you should always plan on playing the table but allow your evaluation (and the completeness of your evaluation) to determine if certain risks are worth taking later on in the set.

The simple answer ... For Me At Least

When I am the spotter ... I play the player to maximize the reward.

When I am the spotee ... I play the game to win ... No matter who I'm playing.

Yeah, trust me when I say he's not worth my time or my effort.

So I guess the rumors are true...I won't be getting a rose. :( LOL
I thought our love for each other ran a lot deeper than this. I can't believe you're allowing one little lover's spat to end it all.

Hey...I warned you right from the beginning that I was going to put gum in your hair and frogs down your back...

David,

Spend a month or two playing the ghost 9 ball. Break, take ball in hand and run the table. If you do, you win. If you miss, you lose. Keep track of the score and play races to 7. If you can't run 9 ball tables, play 6 ball and graduate to 9 ball.

After a month, you'll be a lot better player. After two months, you'll be even better. And you'll know what they mean by play the table not your opponent.

It's the highest level of pool. The zone. To play your best pool, you play the table. Your opponent is a distraction. Thinking about your opponent's play is a distraction. Play every opponent as though they are a champion and accept every miss as a pleasant surprise, like a gift.

The ghost never misses.

Chris
