Mali Cue history. indentifing cues?

Good afternoon,
Roy how do you know so much about Mali cues?I have one with a gold stamp.Trying to identify it.Where can I search at to find out how old my cue is?Thanks.

Mike

Heya Mike,

I have been around them since I was 14 and that was 30 years ago. I still have my first one which was an old green logo from the Tournament series, around 1983. It comes from the same set as the one pictured 2 posts above your post. I believe that one is a T14, the T15 had 4 windows, vs the 2 windows reflected on that one pictured.

Honestly Malis were all I was ever exposed to as I came up through pool. I was in south Florida at that time and Mali was very big there in the mid to late 80s. They were a cheaper alternative than Mueccis, which ruled south FL. I have collected as much material as just about anyone on Mali cues, but still have large gaps in my catalogs and brochures. The gold logo you mention were in the late 88-91 set. I actually have a gold and notice that the butt is thinner than the series before or after the gold series. Fred liked larger diameter butt sections, this was pretty common with most makers of the time.

Feel free to PM me a pic of yours and I will see if I can identify it. Mine is quilted maple with a dark grey stain, upper and lower. Black with white speck wrap and a black buttcap. Mali stamped in gold.

Regards,
~Roy

There is a site listed above,, that shows a whole line of mali cues,,with pictures and other info about each one. Im guessing that must not be their complete line of cues ,,if yours is not there???
Did you look?

Mali

I have almost the exact same cue as the very first pic by thread author. I would appreciate any info on age you come up with.

This is a 1978 Mali 144. No visible logo. I think they tended to rub off easily or maybe these didn't have one? Maybe only a sticker?
2nd highest model next to the "Eagle" model.
Picked it up off of a Craigslist ad in LA LA Land.
Payed $130.

Wildwing is DEF the guy to talk to about Malis. He KNOWS, PERIOD. I have original Mali Catalogs ( I think series 1 somewhere ) - I got them from Wildwing long time ago.Not sure where my catalogs are right this second but I recommend anyone with questions about any MALIS hit Wildwing up and if he is nice enough he can come school us!!!

I saw that one. Passed it up. Cool cue though.

Those come up occasionally, some with really nicely figured maple. If you find one with shaft figure like that, then you have a real find. Yes, there were a few.

I passed on it only because I have several of the top of the catalog Mali cues already. I only really go after them if they are perfect and from the higher end of the catalog. I have a couple green label merry widow cues that I got for $40 each.

Enjoy the cue.

Very nice deal on that one!:thumbup:

I ran across this older thread in my search about Mali cues.
I just bought a V-9 listed at the bottom of this page. http://bluebookofpoolcuevalues.com/...er_Models.aspx?id=MALI_CUES_2005_MALI_VINTAGE

But i see they don't give you a price/value unless you buy the information. (I am guessing)

I never heard of Mali until I bought this cue. I needed a 5/16-14 jointed butt,,, for a OB2 shaft. So I don't really care so much about it playing ability. The shaft makes the stick,,not the butt.IMO.

On the other hand I wouldn't mind knowing what it cost new,,,and what it is worth now. It's a 2005,,,level 4 V-9 ,,,that is in perfect condition. Im amazed how good of shape it is in for being 9 years old. I have the original shaft also.
And a beautiful cue too.
Imported Mali. Decent cue but not real pricey. I'm guessing around 300bux new.

Cool, was asking because I have ( had ) one just like it and loaned it to a " friend " like 2 or 3 years ago and haven't seen it since . It was from first catalog ( the ones Woodwind gave me to help look up model number and determine value. Mine is just like this one; although once I blew it up mine it just slightly different , cues looks identical but mine had the brass joint and pin instead.

Old thread, surprised I missed this the first time. I'll see if I can do a few catalog scans tonight. Most of mine are from the early to mid 80s.

All the best,
WW

Once I replied I realized that you might be asking because the Cue might be stolen!
No prob, I would have cooperated.

Hope you find it one day.

What was the Model # of your cue?

Thanks, but no definitely not stolen. It's just one of those things like borrowing a tool from a buddy and everyone forgets about it. We've been friends for over 30 years so all good. I actually havent asked for it back, he had nothing to shoot with and I have other cues so I told him use it aso long as he needed. Fact of told he matter is neither hardly ever shoot anymore anyway. I'm at like 3 or 4 times a year and he may be even less lol.

Ps, sorry don't recall the exact model # other than I believe it was from first catalog mentioned earlier. If either I can find mine or Wildwing posts up it should be there. I do remember though, out of the entire catalog mine was the only model with brass joint ( and I think mine was one of the lower priced cues in that particular catalog ).

We'll probably identify it. For now, here is the first early 80's Mali catalog when Mike Sigel was representing Mali. He never played a Mali, but represented Fred Mali.

You have to understand, the late 70s Malis' were pretty garish, and Mike Sigel got with Fred Mali to suggest better designs and represent the company. Believe it or not, this was when Sigel was going from Joss to Meucci, an incredible era. Notice if you will, a lot of the joints have very nice Bushka rings, and nice clean workmanship. Bmore, you mentioned yours had a brass joint, and the only one here would be M-1. I don't think that's what you carried. However, there is more to come. I think I know the cue you carried.

For earlier posters, this is the green line ring around the Mali insignia.

All the best,
WW

Thanks for posting the brochure. I love AzB!

Q: Were there other series with the Green Boxed Mali Logo?
I have what looks like the M-1 but has stripes or flames in the Maple.

Thanx again.

Wildwing, thanks again for posting this again. Yes, I believe this is the catalog I had gotten from you before. Also, yes M-1 is my EXACT CUE!. It's been awhile so I could be wrong but I was thinking the catalog you showed me before this ( my cue ) was listed as m-4, or m-5, no but for sure what I have is m-1 per this catalog! Thanks again! It been a couple years of course, any chance you could put any kinda value on the M-1 ( being either an 8 but probably a 9 out of 10 )?.
