I think big factor is that he's playing in the crazy atmosphere of the mosconi cup. Ever see the russian roulette scenes in the vietnamese cities in "The Deer Hunter"? That's what it's like at the cup... more or less absolute silence during the actual shot, but screaming, jumping, razzing, boos and jeers before and after.
Earl, more than most players, seems to be affected strongly by negative stuff from the audience. It seems like he beats the world in a venue where people are mostly quiet and polite and nobody rags directly on him, but gets really sharked at mosconi cups (and maybe also small local pool halls when gambling?). I dunno if it's earl that needs to change or the fans... I hate to see someone play less than their full speed because of unfair outside interference, but I also hate to see the fun sucked out of the mosconi cup atmosphere.
