The first time I saw Johann Chua play was at the World Cup of Pool in 2023.
I remember Jeremy Jones saying Chua was probably a Top Five player in the world if he committed himself to the pro tour.
I thought to myself, what? Like, who is this guy? I had never heard of him.
(Mainly because I knew nothing about pro pool until I started watching in 2022).
Well, Chua dominated that tournament. Absolutely dominated. He carried James Aranas and they won the title.
Beat FSR and Alcaide handily. Beat Filler and Neuhausen convincingly. Had a big lead vs the Ko brothers that they gave up, but still won.
Chua played with great confidence and flair. He made a number of incredible shots. And he coached Aranas to his best performances ever.
After that? Not much for a while. Chua did not commit to the tour in 2023 and he was erratic.
Fast forward to 2024 and he finally committed. And he’s racked up more success than any other player except for Gorst.
Highlights:
Third place, World Pool Championship
Third place, Knight Shot 9-ball Open
Fifth place, 2024 Lushan Open
Second place, European Championship
First place, Hanoi Open
First place, Zen&Youn8 Open
First Place, Marboys Open
