You mean like these rules?Same as marking. Until it's against the rules it's ok.

If a player has to mark the cloth, it would suggest he doesn't know where the mark should be.
Do these turkeys have superlative results?
Yes, the "equal angle" aim point is at the "gutter" (the worn line about 1/2 ball from the cushion nose*). But that's only the right place to aim for pretty steep rebound angles, mostly because a rolling ball tends to "bend" long after rebounding. The aim point for wider angles (say 25 degrees or more) is closer to the diamond on the rail behind the "equal angle" point at the gutter. One mistake some do, imho, when using their tip to find the kick/bank spot is to place the tip under the rail instead of 1/2 away from the rail.
I've found that placing my tip 1/2 ball away from the rail shows me the center of the ball when it first touches the rail and that spot is really where I'm aiming. If I "see" the spot UNDER the rail, I've aligned myself a little off target.
Does that make sense?

Which reminds me of a story Bob Byrne tells of a marking incident. In a golf game at Palace Billiards in San Francisco (on one of the 6x12 snooker tables) a player had to kick at a ball near the side pocket. He walked over to the banking cushion, carefully measured for equal in and out, and placed his chalk on the rail at the precise spot. As he walked around to the other side to shoot, one of his opponents stuck out his cue and moved the chalk a couple of inches. The player didn't notice a thing, got down on his shot, and kicked the ball in perfectly.I was giving a guy the 7/8 once ...bit of an action game.
A guy who had a side bet on me asks " How can you let this guy mark the cloth with his tip on those long cuts?"
I told him that I might have to take a half ball off the spot if he quit marking.![]()

 Good story.
And how is Robert Byrne?
...
I know he is getting on, but I hope he is well.
He was at the Carom Cafe Verhoeven Open 3-Cushion event in Queens this year. (So were 3 generations of Ceulemanses, Raymond, Kurt and Peter.) He's in fine shape for a man of 85. He lives in Dubuque now.

I stepped into the bus and asked the driver, "Does this bus go to Dubuque?"
He replied, "No, it goes toot-ta-toot."
