Maryland Open 10-Ball Championship - April 21, 2012 - Glen Burnie, Maryland

Clarification

Rick Molineiro (AKA Levi) in my opionion has the finest pool room (Big Daddy's) and equipment in Maryland. Additionally he runs very good tournaments and his payouts are very fair and I have never heard any complaints from the tournament participants including myself. I always look forward to playing at Big Daddy's and am fortunate enough to have Rick and his wife Cindy as good friends. They are fair and honest people trying to run a pool room (without Liquor and Electronic Games) and make a living.

Wedge

I have no part in the Maryland championship 8, 9, and 10-ball events other than having helped to get the word out for the past several years. That being said, I’d like to second Wedge’s comments. Big Daddy’s owners Cindy and Rick are some of the best people in the business. They are always happy to welcome everyone to their room and will make you feel at home with a smile, laugh, and hug or handshake. In addition, they run a first-class room; one of the few places left that focuses exclusively on pool.

Sorry to see any misunderstanding here. The Maryland Open 8, 9, and 10-ball Championship events are designed to be as inclusive as possible. They are one day events to try to avoid issues with players’ work/family schedules, entry fees are kept as reasonable as possible, beginners to pros are encouraged to participate, and players from any state are always welcome. As noted in an earlier post, if there is concern over payouts, please see the review of the recent 40 player 8-ball event at http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=3473756#post3473756
for an idea of what can be expected at this Saturday’s 10-ball tournament.

As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out and play this Saturday. Best of luck to all.

Mad computer skills!!

Wow!!!! That is some artwork. Did you check and see the greens fees I was talking about? Sorry if you thought it was out of line.... That just shows how text can really throw a persons judgment off. I never intended to be rude or anything. I just through a quick reply out there......

I'm very busy trying to keep things going strong here. Times are very tough here and everywhere. I don't want to be one of the rooms that goes under. Like I said rooms are dropping like flies. BUZZZZZZZZ

Again, I never meant to be nasty....I just threw in a very quick reply sorry Oyster-head keep on shucking!!! Lol!!!

i tried to go to a couple of tournaments at big daddies last year. over an hour drive from where i live and they were out of spots every time.

i seriously doubt there will be an issue filling this tournament up.

2012 Maryland Open 10-Ball Championship Results

April 21, 2012: Mike Davis made it two for two this year by adding the Maryland Open 10-Ball Championship to his Maryland Open 8-Ball title.

32 players came out to Big Daddy’s Billiards in Glen Burnie, Maryland for this year’s Maryland Open 10-ball tournament. The event was double elimination with races to 7 on the winner’s side and 5 on the one-loss side. An alternate break and rack-your-own format were used. The tables were 9 foot Diamond and Brunswick Gold Crowns. Matches began shortly after 11 a.m. and wrapped up around 10 p.m.

The early rounds saw player auction favorite Mike Davis advancing steadily through the field, including wins over top players Matt Krah and Alan Duty. Other top choices from the player’s auction were Brett Stottlemeyer and Danny Green. These two waged a back and forth battle that went hill-hill before Brett pulled out the win.

Mike Davis and Brett Stottlemeyer continued to progress undefeated through the day until they met to determine who would go to the hot seat. Brett opened the match by running the first rack. Mike came back to tie it at 1 all. Brett won the next rack to go up 2 to 1. Game 4 saw Mike attempt a safety that left a small window of opportunity. Brett started a run that ended when the 6 ball rattled in a corner pocket. Mike finished that rack to tie the score at 2 all. The next game featured a safety battle on the 5 ball. Mike eventually saw enough of the ball to get the rack and go up 3 to 2. Mike went on to win 2 more racks for a 5 to 2 lead. The next game saw Mike run out to the 9 ball, only to over-draw the cue ball when coming back for the 10. He pocketed a tough cut shot on the 10 ball to be first on the hill at 6 to 2. Brett ran out the next game to come back to 3 to 6, but Mike took the next rack for the win.

The one-loss side had a number of good matches to determine who would face Mike Davis in the finals. For example, Big Daddy’s owner Rick Molineiro and Alan Duty are strong players who typically play close games against one another. Today was no exception. Alan started hot and moved to an initial 3 to 0 lead. Rick came back with 3 wins of his own to tie it up. Alan moved through the next rack until he came up with awkward shape on the 8 ball. A clutch shot there got him the win to move up 4 to 3. Rack 8 featured a safety battle on the 2 ball which lasted until Rick scratched. With ball in hand, Alan ran out the remainder of a tough rack for the win.

Danny Green was playing strongly on the one-loss side. He strung together a number of wins there to ultimately come back to face Brett Stottlemeyer in a rematch of their earlier hill-hill battle. The following are highlights of some of these matches:

• Things looked tough initially for Danny in his match against Matt Krah, as Matt moved to a 2 to 0 lead. Danny came back to tie it up and then go up 3 to 2 and 4 to 2 to reach the hill. Matt ran through the next rack until the 6 ball rattled in a pocket. Danny got to the 9 ball but came up with awkward shape and decided to play safe. Matt just missed a table length bank. Danny then ran the last two balls, including a bank in the side on the 10 ball, to win the match.

• Danny’s next match against Mark Touch stayed close all the way. The players traded wins back and forth until Danny found a little daylight to move to 3 to 2. Danny received ball-in-hand in the next game after a good safety and ran out to reach the hill. Danny then broke the next rack and the 10 ball hung in the corner pocket. Both players jockeyed back and forth for position until Mark got ball-in-hand and sank a 2-10 combination to pull back to 3 to 4. The next game saw Danny getting stuck on top of the 7 ball after breaking it loose from a cluster. He played a safe that required Mark to pull out the jump stick. Danny came away after Mark’s jump with a shot on the 7 but had to elevate his bridge to clear another ball. The awkward bridge and need for heavy draw caused a miss and Mark cleared the remaining balls to bring the match to hill-hill. Danny broke dry in the final game but left a couple of tough clusters and the 10 ball sitting in a corner pocket. Mark attempted a tough safety and ended up scratching. With ball-in-hand, Danny used a combination to sink the 10 ball for the win.

• Danny’s and Brett Stottlemeyer’s paths crossed again as they met to determine who would face Mike Davis in the finals. The match opened with a long safety battle on the 2 ball that had both players pulling out the jump stick. Brett rattled his jump in a corner pocket which let Danny run the remainder of the rack. Danny also took the next rack for a 2 to 0 lead, but Brett came back with a break and run to get to 1 to 2. Danny got slightly behind another ball in the 4th rack and his heavy masse stroke didn’t quite touch the object ball. Brett received ball-in-hand and ran through to the 10 ball. He came up with awkward shape and scratched trying to make it. This allowed Danny to go up 3 to 1. Danny then took the next rack to get on the hill at 4 to 1. Undeterred, Brett came back with wins in the next two racks to pull within one game at 3 to 4. Danny broke in the final game, sank a tough 1 ball cut down the long rail, and ran the remainder of the rack for the win.

The final between Mike Davis and Danny Green was played in double elimination format. Coming from the one-loss side, Danny would have to defeat Mike in a race to 7 and then in a race to 5 to claim the title. The match opened with Mike running the first rack. He followed this up with another win to go up 2 to 0. Mike ran out through the 6 ball in the third rack but his cue ball was kicked off of the 10 into a pocket. Danny finished the rack to pull back to 1 to 2. Mike moved to 3 to 1 in the next rack but Danny broke and ran the next to bring it back to 2 to 3. Danny then took the next rack to even the score at 3 to 3. Danny got his first lead in the match in the next game after Mike missed a bank on the 1 ball in the side. Danny cleared that rack to go up 4 to 3. Mike came right back to tie it at 4 to 4. Rack 9 was a mess with the 2 ball tied up in a jumble of balls by the side pocket. Mike played a safety that didn’t provide much of a path to the 2 ball. Danny opted to deliberately foul and tie up more balls rather than risk breaking up the 2 ball tangle. Mike then ran out to the 6 ball where he was faced with a 6-8 combination. He made the 8 but the 6 also dropped, leaving him a tough cut on the 7 ball which missed. Danny ran out to the 10 ball which was on a rail at the foot of the table. His cue ball landed awkwardly right on top of the 10. With no cut shot available, Danny called the 10 ball in the corner pocket and used a kick shot off the long rail to sink the 10 and go up 5 to 4. Mike came back to even things at 5 to 5 in the next game. Rack 11 saw a number of good safeties and kick shots until Mike played a lock down safe in tight quarters. He received ball-in-hand for his effort and finished the rack to reach the hill at 6 to 5. In the final rack, Danny ran through to the 6 ball and played safe on the 7. Mike was able to kick the 7 ball in and then completed the rack for the championship.

Many thanks to the owners and staff of Big Daddy’s and all of the players for a successful event.

Also, the group picture from before the tournament started with all the players would be nice... and Thanks to Rick and Cindy for having a great room, with great service, and GREAT tables (contrary to what a certain cranky old man has to say ALL THE TIME LOL).
it was a great tournament, thanks guys.

And Rick... I will get you next time lol

Sorry that the brackets were only kept on the tournament whiteboard by hand and not electronically for posting.

Rick has the group picture and will try to post it.
