Maryland Straight Pool report.

Dave has a TON of gamble and always bets his own. I heard a story down Ashland once (I'll have to ask Dave to confirm this - but the story came from his own brother, so I have to take it as true) that back in the late 60's when Dave was a teenager, a match was going to be set up between him and Joe Balsis (who was from nearby Minersville and the reigning world champion). But the match didn't happen because Balsis wanted a $500 "appearance" fee just to show up, to which Dave said that if he wanted the $500 that he would have to beat him for it. And this was the reigning world champion he was talking about!!! How's that for barking?

The only time I've ever seen Dave "back off" from a game was with Ray Martin. He said he wouldn't play Ray even and Ray wouldn't give Dave anything, IIRC. Ray apparently had a lot of respect for Dave's game. It was not a matter of money, Ray said "Here's $$$$, now show me what I can win." No problem;) I used the quotation marks because Dave didn't back down, they just couldn't agree on the game. I saw Dave go at it with Pete Fusco at The Arena in Scranton for hours, just about even when I left.

That's the first time I ever heard of Dave asking for or needing weight. He's usually playing even or giving weight. Ray must have been playing really strong for Dave to not want to play him even.

That's how I remember it. I could be wrong but I know they didn't play, at least not then. There may have been some other reason that I can't remember.
I just found a copy of the July, 1987 issue of Pool and Billiard with the article about the 1987 New York State 9-Ball Championship that Dave won. I scanned it but AZ won't take the upload.
