Masse Cue

What makes a good masse cue. I have a custom made ( John Davis/Alex Brick) low deflection player with OB Classic shaft. I will always carry this cue. Also a jump break cue. I am a little afraid to do masse shots with my player. I do not want to carry a three butts. Should I get another shaft designed for masse to use on my player? Any suggestions?

If you want a cue like the artistic players use ...

Total length about 50 inches.

Tip diameter 14mm (or larger if you can find tips)

Tough ferrule.

Typical masse cues are heavier, which would require added weight if you want to get there with just a shaft add-on. That's good because for vertical shots, you want the balance point well below your grip hand.

Along the way, I got three masse shafts for my main player.

I assume you have your own table. ;) If you want to practice masse shots, here are some from Artistic Billiards: http://www.sfbilliards.com/Misc/ArtisticBilliards1987.pdf

A shorter and fatter shaft may work. I would be careful trying big masse strokes with the OB shafts.

The glue used on the ferrules won’t like the impact much.

Now this is a first class reply. Thanks so much for all you do for the pool world, Mr Jewett.

Hey there. Bob is correct in what he is saying. I will add to that. A masse cue is shorter than a playing cue but longer than a jump cue. 14mm shaft/tip is what most of us use. 25oz is the going rate when it comes to the weight. Some go heavier; some go lighter. Most of us use an Elkmaster tip. The best option for you is to get the Action Masse cue. Plain black color with a 14mm shaft and an elkmaster tip. I am currently using an Action Masse cue until my custom masse cue is being built. If you saw me latest YouTube video, you will see that the action masse cue does the trick.

Hope this helps.
