Masters Tournament In Progress

Looks like they didn't send the info from yesterday into Mike.... No post from Templar... Anyone know what happend yesterday besides Shawn beating Szuter? I'm curious as to who won between Corey & Mike... is Brandon still in the winners bracket? So many questions, so little answers.... :(

You know, I can't understand why SOMEBODY at Q-Masters is unable to find time to update the pool media, and in particular this forum.

My call in to Brandon went unanswered yesterday, making me think the kid's in action. Sleep is a luxury at some tournaments, and Q-Masters is open 24/7. ;)

Still, it sucks a big egg that there hasn't been any news forthcoming as of yet. :(

The tournament ends tomorrow I think. I'd imagine at this juncture, the field has been narrowed down. Did Chris Futrell again knock down some heavyweights? Is Young Gun Brandon Shuff still on the A side? How's Corey Deuel hitting 'em, and will Shawn Putnam dominate this field? Or, is there a dark horse in this race who's "killing 'em softly"?

There used to be a computer in the Q-Masters pool room last time I was there, making it quite easy to disseminate a little news. I just don't get it.

Corey beat Mike 9 to 2. After his match he sold his cue. Teddy Garrahan beat Dave White. Right before Teddy and Corey played, someone came up and told Corey he was not aloud to soft break anymore. Teddy ended up winning that match. I'll try and call the guys a little later and find out so more information. amc4

That's ridiculous. You can't just modify rules in the middle of a tournament to your liking. Everyone knows how Corey breaks; this should have been covered in the players meeting prior to playing.

That irks me that tournaments take away Corey using the soft break, I think that it is the most brilliant thing to have come up with. A way to make a ball on a break and to have position on the one, isnt that what we all want. No wonder why he plays golf, pool is shooting him down because he came up with a way to stay at the table. If players dont like it, then all the tournaments they play in should be alternate break. I hope Corey doesnt get too mad about this bulls*#! happening. But when you're the best, people try to bring you down.

I don't know if soft breaking was covered at the players meeting for the Masters, but at the U.S. Open, there is a breaking rule in effect whereby three balls must pass the side pocket or else it is a foul. :p

JAM that was the rule at that tournament too and Corey said he was getting 3 balls past the rail and someone still told him to break them harder. Ever since Corey won the 5 tournaments that one year they been changing the rules around to try and get him from soft breaking. I remember they went as far as racking the 9-ball on the spot, which didn't work because Corey mastered a way to win from there.

People are always trying to stop him from winning. He even follows the rules and they tell him he is still braking too soft, whats next, he has to make all nine balls hit a rail and go past the side pocket, it is just sad that he be treated like that. Makes me not want to learn anymore about pool, because it may work out so well that TD's wont allow it.

I don't believe there is a movement out to prevent Corey Deuel from winning. Rules are changed willy nilly all the time, and I don't like it either, but the TD and/or promoter always have the last word or prerogative to enforce whatever format/rules they desire. I have been on the receiving end of this myself, but that's a topic for another thread! :p

If you ever get the good fortune to acquire the skills set of Corey Deuel, I have a strong feeling that things will work out well for you. No need to worry. JMHO, FWIW! ;)

I would take his shot making ability, that would be fine with me

It's understood that rules change over time and with every tournament, but Corey is being singled out. Why should a TD be able to change rules in the middle of a tournament because he doesn't like the way things are going or because a certain player is doing well?

He's not alone. Why can players use the glove or phenolic tip, but Earl can't use his finger extensions?

How would you like to go the U.S. Open and have your seed taken away from you, even though you were supposed to have one due to your third-place finish the year before, and willy nilly it was given to a player who competed in one senior event in a year's time frame, a player that you could spot the 7, 8, and 9 to?

I don't believe anybody is singling Corey Deuel, but it does suck a big weenie that his breaking has been addressed if three balls are passing the side pocket. I don't get it.

I agree with you Jam. For one if the rule is, which most are, you need to get 3 balls pass the side pocket unless a numbered ball is pocketed it is a legal break.

Why would you get a warning if your breaking legally?  Makes no sense at all. JMO

Say it ain't so Joe....

Are you telling me that I can break them as hard as I can, and IF by some chance I don't get 3 balls past the side pocket, it is a foul? Is that what I'm being told? If so.........WOW :(

Soft Break

I just talked to Mike Davis and I said, "so, Corey soft-breaked you to death. That sucks." Mike said, "Well, it's my fault. I didn't call the tournament director over and then the next match they made him stop doing it." By what Mike said, apparently this was something that was mentioned before hand and not a rule change. Who knows?

Nobody said that he wasnt soft breaking, but when he did, he was following the rules by getting 3 balls past the side pockets, which is considered a legal break, thats where it is wrong. If he is breaking legally according to rules (getting 3 balls past the side pockets), then there should be no telling him that he needs to break harder.

Here's the latest as of 10:00 PM.
Corey Deuel won his match on the one loss side and will play again. I think he will be playing Eric Moore.
Bustamante beat Santos...Santos is out.
Chris Futrell (15 year old local) beat Mike Davis then lost to Eric Moore (another local). Chris is out.
Eric Moore beat Scott Frost...Scott is out.
Robert Ray beat Teddy (don't remember his last name) in a tense hill-hill match. Teddy is out. Robert appears like a machine. If he feels the pressure, it sure doesn't show. His stroke is smooth, precise and pure. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him. He will now have to play Bustamante and while Robert is a very good player, I don't think he is quite yet in the same league as Django.
About the Corey soft break issue...he was doing it again today and nobody said anything to him about it. It really seems to work for him but that may be because the players are racking their own balls in this tournament.

THANKS so much for the update, Templar. You must be the only AzB-er in attendance. I was curious as to who was in and who was out.

What does Robert Ray look like? I think I know who it is, but I can't be quite sure. It looks like the North Carolinian is having a good tournament.

Players racking their own balls. I now know why there was some squawking resulting in TD Scott Smith and Promoter Barry Behrman having to take action to calm the troops.

I remember talking to Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant at the SBE this year in the smoking lounge between games in his match at the pro event. He knew the rack he was being provided by an unnamed opponent was intentionally done to prevent him from pocketing balls. There was verbal exchange each game, with Charlie stating he only wanted to get a "fair" rack.

Whether loser racks or winner racks, this will continue to be a controversy. I know the pros and cons of each, and I'm not sure what will get rid of this ugly monster which crops up at every single tournament. It is a 9-ball problem. Neutral rackers is the only way to overcome it. You would never see professional bowlers wanting to re-rack their pins because they don't like the mechanical rack. :D

Do you know who Corey beat... was it Josh Brothers & if so do you remember the score? Thanks

This is from the main page.

Garrahan scored a 9-7 win over Corey Deuel when Deuel was warned about his soft break. Deuel was getting the requisite number of balls past the side pocket, but was still warned about the break.

That is complete Horse shit if he breaking by the rules and still receiving warnings. It might not be an effort to hurt Corey but it sure looks that way.
