Match of my life

This weekend I went down to Charleston, SC for the Great Southern Billiards Tour hosted by Shannon & Marge. It was my first time playing in one of their events and I must say they do a great job.

I posted my best finish in a regional event by coming in 5th-6th place. Just in the money. I should have at least came in 4th place but I just ran out of gas I guess in my final match that I lost 9 to 7 which I had a chance to go up 8-7 but I dogged a long 9. It was tough because I had to play 4 matches back to back without getting a break.

Anyways, like the thread title indicated... I had the match of my life in this tournament. I had just lost a tough match on the winner's side to Biff Bowden 9-7, who also finished 5-6th, and I had to play immediately against one of the best players in the Carolinas, Mike Staubs.

I started out by breaking and running the first rack and then also winning the next, but I started to stumble by making a few careless mistakes which Mike took advantage of. He started running out, like Mike does, and began to run right through me by having 8-2 lead over me needing only 1 more win for the match with me needing 7. I got a few opportunities at the table but I was shooting straight up in the air due in part to seeing my opponent running over me. One thing I caught myself doing was being real negative and being mad at myself for looking like an idiot in front of a large crowd that was watching the match. I recomposed myself and just started taking it 1 game at a time.

I don't know the specifics of the rest of the match because when I am totally focused the games just feel like yesterday's dream... But I ended up coming back and tying the match 8-8 on the hill. I then wiped down my stick, took a few deep breaths, and then broke... I hit the break really nice but the cue ball heartbreakingly got kicked into the corner pocket and the table was wide open. Mike had a somewhat tricky position to get on the 2 and ended up hooking himself leaving a long jump shot which he drilled. He then played me safe on the 4 but left an edge that I could see. I tried thinning the 4 and leaving the cue ball up table but I hit it a little too thickly and left him a long 4 in the corner, which he made, but then hooked himself on the 5. He kicked at the 5 but left me a shot on it, which I ran out for the improbable comeback victory.

I've never came back from such a huge deficit before... especially against such a strong player that is favored so heavily against me. Definitely a match that I'll always remember.

Thought I'd share that with you guys. Happy Holiday's!

If I'm not mistaken, that's what they call "heart". An inspiring story, Poked.

Thanks Patrick. I've always had a lot of fight in me when I was down but this is definitely the most memorable.

Someone did that on Mike Janis in Atlanta. He was up 6-0 going to 7 and the guy got 7 in a row on him :D :D :D

Gj man nice come back.

WOW!
That is a match to remember against anyone let alone against a strong player. The match says a lot about who you are as you relate to pool. Congratulations. That's a great milestone. You have learned a valuable lesson.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

awesome job.
I know what you mean about being so focused it seems like a dream. On my 8 ball team my teammates don't believe I can't remember many specifics about a game. It seems whenever I play a match I get focused like that. Nice to be in the zone....
Congrats on the victory.

WAY TO GO!!! As a non-smoker I don't play out nearly as much as I'd like and when I do, I have had to forfeit on more than one occasion...once when I had one more match to get in the semis.

So, I know what a rush it must have been for you to finish that high against tough players!

TAP TAP.

Thanks for the kind words Joey. They're appreciated. I have been in a big slump in my game for the last few months, so I quit going to weekly pool tournaments and playing pool for the most part. A win like this will do a lot for my confidence and hopefully help me out of the slump I've been in.

It's usually not a good idea to knock one's own action but here is a picture of me from the event... I think I still keep a little anonymity. :D

I can't see the pic because this network is blocking it, but I'm guessing you have appropriated the "Masked Marvel" pic of billiard forum infamy?? :D :D :D

It would be great to snap one off. But it will be really tough with guys like Larry Nevel and Shannon Daulton always in those tournaments. I watched the finals between those two and the first match went hill-hill and there was only 1 missed shot the entire match. They each pushed twice to a jump shot which was passed back to them. Each jump was pocketed and the rest of the rack ran!

Great comeback!!

My match that I will never forget started out very ugly. The first two games took 45 minutes, lots of misses and safeties in the race to 4 8-ball match. Opp takes a potty break, giving me a few minutes alone. I realize that I am not chewing any gum, which I do to help relax.

He racks, I break and run to make it 1 - 2
I break and run, but scratch on the eight (needed about an inch more green).
I break and run to make it 2 - 3
He dry breaks, I run out. 3 - 3
Another dry break, I run out to win 4 - 3

Only after winning, did I realize what I had just done. This was a good lesson to not pat myself on the back ( I don't shoot so well with one hand), but keep the focus on the task at hand.

What a great feeling it was to think about his little gallery cheering after the second win, then all he does when he returns is to break 3 times.
