Matchroom Improvement list

Watching how a David Alcaide vs Jaybee Sucal match ended made me think, Matchroom really has to keep track of earlier decisions they make.

Here is a quote from The Official World Nineball Tour Event Rules

12. Conceding
In all World Nineball Tour events concessions are not permitted. If a player concedes a rack or a match they will be reported to the Tournament Director for further sanctions.

That said, conceding a rack or match is explicitly forbidden in the World Nineball Tour event rules, according to Google's Gemini.
Now please tell me how Jaybee's move shuffling last two balls after he fouled is not a concession, technically 😆

(I know that is common when gambling in the Philippines, kind of acknowledging the rack is done and dusted; but here we are at a tournament, a major, with a written rule code, blah blah blah)

I am going to geek out and allow the OCD, math, and logic in me run free:

1, 2, 3 are primary colors
1 = Yellow
2= Blue
3 = Red

Using a purely math progression:
4, SHOULD BE: 1 + 2, Yellow + Blue = Green;
5 SHOULD BE : 1 + 3, Yellow + Red = Orange;
6 SHOULD BE 2 + 3, Blue + Red = Purple
7 SHOULD BE mud-blood, Yellow + Blue + Red = Brown
8 SHOULD BE no color, i.e., Black
And of course the CB is all colors, White

But that's not how it was developed. 4 is Purple, 2 Blue + 3 Red; 5 is orange 1 Yellow + 3 Red; I don't agree but it's legacy.

I can almost see how the original colors were developed. 1 combo with 2; 2 combo with 3 for Purple for 4, 1 combo with 3 Orange for 5. So let's allow the long, long history of 4 Purple, 5 Orange and 6 Green stand.

It is egregious that the long-standing colors, needing to be adjusted to satisfy the requirements of clarity for TV screens, one color should NEVER have replaced a legacy color. It's that simple. F*$% purple 5's. I don't care how successful you are promoting the game. Violating history by reassigning a legacy color to a different number is simply wrong.

Color me blue for my relative inability to deal with grey; I'm a black-and-white person. (See what I did there? LOL)

Lots of criticism of WNT/Matchroom lately from some fans, players, influencers and sport VIPs like Yohan Ruysink.

Some of the criticism is quite fair. Some of it might be unreasonable given the financial and limited-audience realities of the sport.

Here’s my list of MR improvements I’d like to see. I’ll add extended commentary in a followup post.

1) Create and publish the schedule well in advance.

2) Collaborate better with WPA/Predator on scheduling.

3) Revamp and unify the point system. It’s too top heavy.

4) Improve and publish the rules on qualifying for invitational events.

5) Merit-based Reyes/Mosconi player selection.

6) Set and stick to an invitational lineup.

7) Stop playing favorites.

8) Reward top-ranked players.

9) Fix and improve WNT.TV.

10) Get rid of the purple 5 ball.
And double the size of the numbers on the balls so they can be seen on screen.

On https://matchroompool.com/rankings/ , latest show they are sticking to selection criteria of 1st to 3rd ranked + 2 captain picks. Which means Filler and SVB are in.
Though nothing definitive yet cos MR is famous for moving the goalposts :ROFLMAO:

I’ve watched a lot of Lukas this year. He’s made big progress, but he’s not even where Shane Woolford was two years ago. I think Lukas needs another year of progress to be considered for the Mosconi. Thorpe is a better player now. He’s arguably playing his best pool ever.

The key is Gorst and SVB playing like stars. They didn’t last year. The European Team has two rookies and it’s not as strong as usual. I think it will make for a more competitive Mosconi.

I say Lukas and Billy play a race to 21 for the spot. Let them earn it instead of picking your buddy like we all know Sky is gonna do.

"He's arguably playing his best pool ever"

That's not saying much, unfortunately.

He's playing his best pool ever but alas, a rookie has him beat in overall points and financial earnings, by $3,250.

It's sad that we need to go against a weaker Euro team with 2 rookies to even be considered to have a chance at winning lol.

If you're going by experience, then yes Thorpe is ahead of Lukas. But if we're talking drive, hunger, dedication, it's Lukas hands down. Those characteristics would help him do well in the MC. We've seen time and time again guys who play great all year then go stink it up at the MC, so why not give a new guy a chance, maybe it will yield different results.

Thorpe has had many chances, and has not done much with it when given these opportunities, so it's just frustrating to know he will get captains pick because he's best friends with Sky.

It'll be the same crap next year, I'm sure someone will be like "omg but Skyler played so good in that one tournament earlier this year in February, he deserves to be on the team" lol.

Why do you think Lukas needs another year under his belt to be considered for MC if he's currently above Thorpe in tourney results and $$?

The bar has been set way too low for our guys.

I don't mean to sound like a Thorpe hater, I used to like watching him a lot during his younger days coming up, but heck even Hunter Lombardo might fare better at MC than him. I'm just tired of seeing wasted potential I guess.

Good points. Reasonable perspective. I’m just not convinced Lukas wouldn’t get overwhelmed by the moment. Billy has beaten a lot of very good players this year. Lukas doesn’t have many big wins that I can recall. I simply think Billy gives the US a better chance to win.
