Matchroom Opens -- qualifiers

No, it’s not really. This isn’t golf for one, and “Open” in pool, and especially this event from the time BB created it meant OPEN until it was purchased by MR, so we’ll have to agree to disagree.

It’s not always bangers either. I saw something transpire at the event held in September of 1999 that was one of the most interesting and satisfying hustles I ever saw transpire in pool.
"Open" means the general public have an accessible avenue to obtain a position in the main draw. Assuming there will be qualifying events, that remains true. Your personal definition doesn't alter reality.

Based on my exposure at the 2023 Open. There is zero possibility of any level of hustle. Emily squashed a $10 prop bet the pinoys had at one of the practice tables the instant she caught wind of it.

so what happens when there are 128 spots and thousands of players want in? the ones who are fastest at clicking with a computer mouse or at updating a website gets in. this has been the case for years now and it's both unfair and useless. computer skills shouldn't merit a position in the world's most prestigious pool tournament. pool skills should.

Many carom events have qualifiers at the same venue in the days before the main event. It gets the cloth broken in -- very important for carom -- and it allows lots of lower-ranked players to have some experience in a top event. About 200 players are distilled down to 12 who join the 20 seeded players for the 32-player main event.

I think same-venue qualifiers make the most sense because it guarantees that the player will be at the event.

... You have several rounds of qualifying for the US Open in golf. It is still open. ...
The qualifiers for the U.S. Open Golf Championship are in two stages -- local qualifiers (over 100) and final qualifiers (about a dozen). But to even play in a local qualifier you must be a really good golfer, someone whose established handicap is not higher than x (a low number). So the average golfer (and even quite good golfers) cannot play in a qualifier. But it is "open" to everyone to get good enough to play in a local qualifier.:)

Why ppl continue arguing on "Open or Not-so-Open" topic, that's beyond understanding. Maybe that's pool players' nature. F**k the naming, the main thing is to hold qualifiers eventually.
Not long ago World Pool Championship had such. It was 3 or 4 satellite tournaments, KO from Round 1, either winner or finalists getting a spot in the main bracket. Very often the winners of such a massacre were much better prepared than those who they got drawn against in the main event.

I think we may be reading too much into that box on the page. It’s never been first come first serve under MR. There have always been “reserved” spots. The rest of the field was first come first serve.

I bet it will be the same. No way in hell there will be 128 qualifiers. Maybe 32 if we are lucky. And the rest will be first come first serve.

If it keeps growing I could see 128 qualifiers in the future. Maybe in 5-10 years. Not this year, however.

Exactly. Any player in the top 128 would have gotten a spot even if late. It is not Matchroom's first rodeo.
