Matchroom WNT 2025 - Problems and progress

Joe, where is the announcement of the 8-Ball event?

That's probably it thanks. Lot's of youtubes. One in particular they're goofing around with a wheel of fortune app that has multiple options for game ball ie bank, opposite handed etc...

Now the other two guys?

no idea on the top right one but the left one is wu kun lin. just looks a little different with a game face there

Relatively stable govt, player safety and lack of corruption among them. Philippines appears to satisfy the first two conditions.

it's far from the safest country in asia.. but i don't know. jay would know more on what it takes to rig a tournament there. either way it's well over due

to the left of Filler is Rubilen Amit - Filipino player
Amit I got. Can't miss that. The other left; Filler's left. :ROFLMAO: The bottom left guy looks more like Wu than the upper row guy. Looks too young and the hair is combed. lol. Looks more like the guy that just outran the Layan.

Oh never mind I misread that post.

Frazer had a lot of interesting stuff to say in an interview on the new Boomer and Frost podcast last week. Some notables:

*WPA and other groups have stepped up competition because of Matchroom. No surprise, that, but the WPA just announced it will create its own TV/video site and it's coming in July. The Bali 8-ball and related events are also a five-year deal, according to the WPA.

*Matchroom is working on an app for WNT. Evidently a lot more stuff is coming on the channel. MR is also planning its own podcast.

*Says MR has to do more events in the US to improve Mosconi in the long run. More hints of something coming in the next year in Texas and perhaps even California.

*Some events have found their long-term places in the calendar. Mosconi in late Nov-early Dec. Hanoi and Reyes in October. US Open in August.

*Part of the problem with the 2025 calendar delays stems from an effort to build a cohesive tour that is somewhat like tennis - one or more ranking events leading up to a major in places that are geographically close.

*There is no money in pool she said repeatedly. Not right now. But insists "the money is coming." TV has to be a big part of it, not just free YouTube videos.

*Said some funny stuff seeming to admit she goofed when she changed ball colors. Didn't know anything about the game or its history when she started, but wanted to improve visuals for TV.

She said MR will continue to make big changes in how pool is presented and events are organized. They are not wedded to conventions and want to get fans more involved and close up.

MR has a few major shortcomings in my opinion.

The tie-in with amateurs via leagues that allows players to get experience before crossing over to being a pro. The Predator sponsored events coincide with CSI-based pool leagues in the US, Ultimate Pool is its own league, etc.

Women. Zero women or support for them. MAJOR problem.

"WNT.TV" - never mind that it is actually wnttv.com, not wnt.tv. They have a weird marketing propensity to put dots in word strings that make no sense. Regardless, their online streaming platform is complete garbage. And in case you missed the memo, streaming is where it is right now, whether you like it or not. They still lock markets out, there is no coherent scheduling, can't rewind/pause, can't watch all previously streamed matches, the issues are numerous. Their streaming efforts are a bastard stepchild and poorly implemented.

I hope they continue to improve, but I would think they need to address these issues before their bottom line can improve.

Sorry for the long post garczar, you should probably just go fishing or something. Your attention span is obviously not conducive to this place. Someone should train an LLM on you and name it BESOAM - bitter empty shell of a man. It would be hilarious, kind of like Debbie Downer but the old grumpy white guy version.

Still tho.... no semi-pro tour for the US.
I don't see the money in semi-pro. Matchroom first has to get its act together on the WNT before it spends much effort on the minor leagues.

Frazer sees junior opens as the Matchroom approach to younger players. The Florida Open will have a junior event. I found that surprising given there will be another one at the U.S. Open later in the same month.

Too little? Maybe. MR probably sees it as a Triple A option. The functions of Double A and Single A will have to be done by others.

Yet combined with Predator, I think the two entities are making some headway.
Women. Zero women or support for them. MAJOR problem.
Frazer has said MR will eventually get into the women's game, but I don't see it happening quickly. Several women have been invited to WNT events and Pia Filler is a WNT Pro. Matchroom also is allowing girls to play in the junior events now. Baby steps.

Totally agree. I've made these complaints numerous times to wnttv.com and the poster on this site affiliated with them.

If the photo accurately tells us that Filler and Biado will play in the event, it's raises some questions.

Filler has yet to play in the Hanoi Open.

In 2023, he chose to play in the WPA World 8-Ball tournament held around the same time. He still was able to play in the Mosconi, however.

In 2024, he skipped Hanoi due to the WPA ban. He was removed from the Mosconi team by MR, as we all know.

This year, he is likely to earn enough points to get a Mosconi auto bid. But MR bylaws seem to suggest players have to play in all majors to qualify.

Given the WPA deal, I think MR should let him play in the Mosconi if he earns it.

Still have to wonder why he is skipping a big event like Hanoi for the third straight year. Maybe the best country to monetize pool fame. Then again, he will have far less comp in the WPA 8-ball tourney and could win a nice, big prize fund.

Biado, like Filler, is sponsored by Predator. And Predator is sponsoring the 8-ball tourney. Would his spot in the Reyes be in jeopardy? MR can't treat him and Filler differently. Best to let them both play in the invitationals if they earn it.

Surprised the ad doesn't show more big-name men players. I know 8-ball is not big to most of them, but Predator has a lot of sway. Albin Ouschan will be a good test case. He has said he doesn't like 8-ball, but Predator is his sponsor, too.

i digress but in the chat between scott and sharkman, what do they mean filler raked in 190k in buffalos? it was a calcutta in which his buyer paid all his expenses but most of the cc $$ surely went to the buyer? joe something

i tend to lean towards this being a scheduling fuggup. the predator players have contractual obligations and presumably the prize money is higher although the field is (presumably) smaller.

i don't care much for elite pros playing 8-ball personally, it's boring. breaking contest

The WPA 8-ball tourney winner in 2024, Filler, got $75,000, the runnerup $45,000 and third-fourth got $22,000.

By contrast, the Hanoi payouts are $40,000 for the winner, $15,000 for the runnerup and $9,500 for third-fourth.

I can see why some players might opt for 8-ball. Easier money in a less crowded (64 players) less talented field.
