Mcdermott 3-piece travel cue

I’m currently playing with a custom prototype 3 piece carbon fiber cue. Each section is 20” long. Hits very similar to my Revo shaft Diamondwood cue. I do need a case for it

I would also like to see pictures. Did you make it yourself?

I'm also playing the revo.

I would love to see pic of the three piece c.f. cue.

Thanks,

Rake

JB Cases. He's built several cases for 3-piece travel cues.

Some pics from today. Please PM me with an offer if you're still interested. Sorry to hijack... finally got them to upload, had to resize.

This winter I will build a three piece cue. I have been thinking about it for awhile, this will be full size(not a mini). The problem I see is that you will still need to check it if flying.

I've got the Sheldon as well (case by Brian Bonner). You do have to check it, but it fits in pretty much all suitcases so it's still easier to travel with than a regular cue.

I like having a travel cue I'm used to and having the same tip brand as my regular cue.

I was at a meeting at a resort in Carefree, Arizona and the house cues were McDermott Star cues.
I thought the Star cues were about the crappiest, poorly made cues I've seen other than the obvious.
Surprised McDermott is doing this with these cheap Star & Lucky cues, I would rather have a Players.
As far as a 3-piece travel cue, a decent jump break with a playing shaft would be much better.

A standard length J/B with a 29 inch playing shaft will not fit in a saddlebags of my Harley.

It's not about how many pieces it is, it's about how long the package is when in the case.

Poison made a nice 3 piece that came with 2 shafts (so four total pieces), you could tip one for play and one for break. And it came with a case. I think they were around $250 several years ago. They are almost impossible to find now.

The Poison stuff I've used is decent, not falling apart like those Star cues, and The Predator Group took care of me when I split a Venom break shaft.
I probably side-loaded the tip on the Venom shaft but they didn't care, just replaced it.
Big difference between Poison and Star in my opinion.
I would think Poison cues are a little more expensive than Star cues.

I made a travel cue out of a stinger j/b.

Didn't change the j/b butt....other than pin.

What I did change was the shaft.

It was a total of 4 pieces. It looked like it had a mid cue extension but it was nothing more than the shaft in two pieces.

Specs:

Normal butt length.
Shaft was 32" as follows:
12mm from tip for 18.75" to joint.......... after joint it stayed 12mm for 1.25" and then started to rise until it met forearm size. Second part of shaft was 13.25".

I had all pins made of g10 to help take all the extra joint weight. I even had the butt joint replaced with g10.

It actually weighed .5 oz less than it did with normal 29" standard shaft that came with it.

Actually you shouldn't need to check it. If you put it in your cabin baggage, there is nothing that should make security suspicious. Have you been ever asked specifically to check in a 3 piece cue?

Julian

That sounds like a very odd set-up with parts of various lengths. Pictures?

Julian

I sold my bike and the cue was part of the sale.

I tried to use the readymade travel cues but the tapers always restricted my stroke length due to rising to fast.

I'm trying to remember how much it cost. It seems like I paid $125 for the two-piece shaft to be made. I already had the stinger j/b.

Any j/b could be used. I'm not sure how much it would cost. I guess it depends on who you called.

As for odd. Not really. Just picture your normal shaft cut into and jointed back together.

Btw, If you like a stiffer hit you could have the shaft made of diamond wood. Especially, if you like skinny shafts. Diamond wood stays stiff even at really small diameters.

I looked for a pic but don't have one. I sent the guy that bought it a text but he said he sold it not long after at a bar while on the road.

He did tell me that he hot $350 for it. I knew I should've held on to it.

Good luck,

Rake

oh no. You have to check it. The second your carry-on goes through the x-ray machine it's gonna get pulled, TSA is then going to see what it is, and then tell you pool cues (3-piece or not) are prohibito. THEN, you get to figure out how to get your pool cue to your destination while not missing your flight.

Good times.

What about the old school cane/pool cue combo, can we carry those on?

Technically, prohibited as carry on items (and frankly I wouldn't want to try and smuggle one on board).

Anyone remember those five-piece cues from China in its own little luggage style case :-)

Anything longer than 7" is going to get your bag tossed (pulled aside, opened and examined).
