McDermott and CueTec Cues

A friend of mine and I play pool pretty seriously about once a week. We usually play nine ball. We've been doing this for about 3 or 4 years and are okay.

Neither of us spend any time practicing outside of our games and we do enjoy some beers while playing.

We've been playing with house cues up until recently. I just purchased a McDermott MG3 a few weeks ago and have enjoyed playing with it. He just got a CueTec today which I've yet to see.

I know most of you are into really high end cues, but what's the general opinion of McDermott and CueTec as far as low end cues go for bangers like us?

I'm sure mine will suit my needs for a while I just haven't seen much written about McDermotts.

I believe a McDermott cue is of considerably higher quality than a Cuetec. I have 2 of them and that's about all I play with.

I have one that is 5 years old and I had them make me 2 new shafts and install a leather wrap. They did excellent work and only charged me $230 incl. shipping

Just a humble opinion from a C player.

McDermott makes a great cue for beginners, intermediate and advanced players alike. I think that they have a great cue, but the reason that you don't find many conversations on AzB about them is because we are more inclined to discuss custom cues, as you can pick virtually any aspect of them. I have a McDermott and it hits very well, it is the EF-19.

As far as Cuetec goes, I cannot stand them. I think that their shafts are sub-par at best. They hit decent if you are a casual player and want to get used to them, but if you are looking for serious play, I'd steer clear of them.

Just my .02, which is actually worth far less.

I think you did OK with the McDermott. They are not for me but I know other people who like them a lot and are faithful to them.

Along the lines of the cuetec, I just cant stand it when a company tries to put some type of special layer over whatever over the shaft to try and make it better then wood.

So IMO.

McDermott: Thumbs Up
CueTech: Thumbs Down

McDermott makes quality production cues that lots of people love. I can't say the same for Cutec.

I used to have a mcdermott, it warped in 2 weeks, whether or not that had anything to do with me working in a pool hall & someone mistakenly taking it to use, i don't know. But I never had any legit complaints about them, I think they are good cues.. I now shoot with a cuetec, the only great thing about cuetecs is that they are ding, dent & warp resistant....I never have to sand the shaft,I also love the veltex grip...However you really can't beat the feel of wood, fiberglass doesn't always cut it.
A pro that sponsers cuetec once told me that, that's about the only good thing about a cuetec cue.

I have a lower end Mcdermott and even though it is the first decent cue I played with, I like it very much. I think it was a great buy, and I know it hits as well as some of the higher end cues that I have recently shot with.

I started with a McDermott... and later added a Predator 314 shaft to it. There's still nothing wrong with it... but it doesn't compare to my custom cue.

McDermotts are OK.

If you like it that is all that matters. I have two 1990 McDermott's and like them but I don't know anything about the current models.

It is a stiff, hard shaft much like the Pred 314. And some deflection stats I have seen are pretty close to the 314.

Both of mine I picked up used. The first one was given to me. The second one I paid $110 with a Guiseppe 2x4 case which I also love.

The most important thing about a cue is do you win with it. So far my winnings with it are around $185 since Jan. If it fails me I can go back to my Schon.

McDermott is a good cue.

Cuetec is good for longevity.

Both play as good as any other cue, for the most part.

Most people around here are pure pool aficionados so they will disect all aspects of the game and especially cues.

Truth be told, we all shoot about the same with any cue. The only real differences between cues are the things you can measure that affect game play. Tip size, taper, deflection, weight, balance. The things that on't matter are points, style, who makes it, how much it is worth, how jealous your friends are, what kind of wood, etc..

Even something like weight does not make a noticable difference. Nobody really plays so precise that a half ounce is going to throw their game. Its all in their head, for the most part...

I look at it like cars. A 1988 Chevy with good working parts is going to get you from point A to point B just as fast as a 2006 Dodge...

If you think about it, Efren will whip your ass with a house cue and so will the best player in your room.

Most people are more concerned with the collectability and prestige of a cue more than the reality of the "play".

I have owned McD and cuetec. I would take the McD first but both are better than house cues since you can control their care.

With all that said, I use a custom cue that is all real. NO lazy CNC, real points, and hits like Tyson ;)

Thanks guys. I really do like my cue and it's definitely a step up from the bar cues.

I'm not sure if it's a mental thing or just coincidental timing but while I was out playing last night with the new cue I ran out my first ever complete game of nine ball (every ball 1-9). Sweet!!!!!!

i have a had a McDermott for a couple of years now, noting special but just a good sloid cue, like stated before, is a step up from a 'HOUSE CUE".
