I don't see much here about MsDermott Cues. How popular are they? Any pros use them? How would you rate them? Thanks for the input.

I break with a McDermott, it works nicely.

You mean that you use a POS cookie cutter production cue? You cheap bastard...I don't even do that. I use a Sledge, but there are plenty of "custom break cues" to choose from. Let loose with that first buck you ever earned.

I'd like Mcdermotts better if they didn't have those butt ugly rubber bumpers. Sledgehammers are production cues. Unless you have one of the $1,200 Sledgehammers.

OK putting the pissing contest aside...

McD used to make a nice cue back in the C and D production days, and then they went to s**t. I believe they have recently made a re-commitment to quality by warranting their i-series shafts for life.

Now McD's are a rear weighted American made cue. Id buy one for the $ over a Lucasi so similar production cue, just don't buy the entry level model.

Joss might still be a better cue, but thats just one mans opinion.

or get a custom SP

I've carried the same McD for ten years. Sometimes it stays home when a new custom moves in or another cue catches my eye. But in the end that is the one I'll keep. I like some of the newer models but I wouldn't go over 250 bucks on one. Once you get up in that range your money is probably better spent elswhere. JMTC

McDermott's are good, sturdy cues..........why else would I use them to replace the broken legs on my bar stools???

They feel like a club to me. They seem to be butt heavy and also have a thick butt.

They are popular in some leagues because there is always a dealer that will give discounts. Some players like them because they can change the weight bolt rather easily. They think that is a great feature. They are good beaters and fairly cheap in price. A good value for a beginner or casual player, even though many good players will also swear by them. Many players do not get hung up on a custom cue and are content with the first and only cue they bought. If it isn't broke don't mess with it.

I have a Sierra that may be the best hitting cue I own.
I have a Shamrock that may be the worse hitting cue I
have. Hope that helps.

My first reasonable cue was a Brunswick (by McDermott), with a nice stenciled logo with words to that affect. It does not have the funny looking bumber, but otherwise it's a very basic McDermott. It is a fine cue, but I've switched to a Falcon now, only because it looks nicer ;) (OK, it also has a nice thin butt as opposed to the rather fat butt on the Brunswick/McDermott, better for my small but mighty hands)

The butt diameter does not bother me, though it is only my break cue. I ought install a different tip on it sometime and shoot with it to see if that changes.

Thanks for all the replies...

Thanks to everyone that has replied. It sounds like if you like a large butt and ugly bumper, McDermott's the cue for you. :)

THATS WHAT DADDY LIKES. Seriously though I think that new one I bought (and now selling) has much smaller diameter butt than old trusty. I'll stand by my good cue for 250 and under statement. The factory shafts usually need tweaked a bit too.

McDermott

About a 6.6 on a 1-10 scale ...

You guys do realize, don't you, that most break sticks are 'reworked'
Sneaky Petes, no matter what they tell you. That's one reason you
don't see that much difference in the break.

I have yet to see anyone with a sledge or stinger or other break stick
show 'statistics' for past break cue vs. their new wham bang break cue.

old cue = 42% a ball made 38% = good layout
new cue =68% a ball made 58% = good layout

a ball made improved by about 62%
good layout improved by about 50%
overall improvement with the new break cue = 56%

It's like anything else, you have to compare old actuals vs the new actuals
before you really know.

LOL what wrong with a big butt. all the kikel cues i have played with have big butts they hit good. As for mcdermotts quality lifetime warranty on warpage well I might just have to sell all my custom cues and play with a mcdermott cue because the custom cues shaft seem to warp on me.... No joking I could never get rid of my custom cues I love custom hand made cues even warped ones they hit so good. straightwst shaft i ever seen was on my custom prather worst shaft i have ever seen was on a brand new nova cue my mom has you can put your hand under the shaft well it lays on the table lol.

McDermott markets and has Bludworth origional designs,Vivian Villarreal V2 collection, new Jenn Barretta collection,Mike Massey collection, their stains are european organic pigment stains ,their paints are the same paints used on Mercedes Benz autos, they use at least 5 coats of polyurethane clear, they sell the new ice technology I-shafts with Morri tips, regular shafts have one peice triangle tips, they have a LIFETIME WARRANTY for cues, shafts and cases. They've been making cues since 1975. Whats not to like?

McDermott basically screwed over a friend of mine.

Joss makes a cue for around the same price, I would reccommend them over McDermott anyday.
