Mcdermott D series

Hello to all,

I found a Mcdermott d series D-2 pool cue in my fathers closet, the shaft was slightly warped. I gave it to a friend to install a new tip and he clearly screwed it all up as the warp was intense when i received it back from him. I gave up on the cue for a while but now im searching for new shafts (for cheap) that will fit but i cannot find any specs on any of the D series cues. If anyone has any information or specs on this specific cue or any in the series that would help in finding a new shaft. Another thing im contemplating is if its even worth it to find a new shaft seeing as the cue is probably only worth $100. Any input is appreciated thank you!

The D-Series is legendary.

I would say it is certainly worth finding a shaft.

It might even be possible to straighten the one you have in fact. Manwon can talk to you about that.

For the record, I have a D-2 and will never sell it. I have had it since about 89 I think and next to my JOSS it's the best cue I have ever owned.

The pin on that is a 3/8x10, very common. There are many great shafts that will fit it. You can even go back to McDermott if you like.

If you are trying to do it "on the cheap" I am confident you can find a shaft that would be acceptable as well. The wanted and for sale forum here might turn something up.

If you are looking for a shooter it isn't about the dollar value anyway.

Thank you for the info. I would've wanted to keep the shaft original if i got a new one but i guess i can keep the warped one and shoot with the other... Any suggestions on good shafts (personal experience).

I dont know what info Manwon would have but i have the cue hanging by the furrel right now in my basement, its been there for a few days now.

Although gravity might help, it's actually not likely to striaghten it I think.

Manwon did a thread about shaft straightening. Use the search function.

I would suggest getting a McDermott shaft. The Ebay link provided looks like a great value.

If you want something in a high performance shaft or an engineered shaft you will spend substantially more, even used.

If you want, Ryan at Muellers can make you a shaft with matching ringowrk. The D-2 just has a white plastic ring inside black. Pretty simple. Ryan makes good shafts with matching ringwork for a killer price from what I hear.

you can purchase original mcdermott shafts for cheap with ebay.

there are 2nds which are blemished by brown spots, it's just a natural stain in the wood.
mcdermott doesnt sell these as aa+ so they're sold as 2nds.

they usually sell $20.00 to $40.00.
good luck

Actually...there is more wrong with the factory 2nds than advertised. Most all of them have a small shaft collar diameter. I have close to 30 of them here and most of the shaft collars measure from .820-.835.

McDermott is pretty bad with consistency of the shaft collar diameters.

For the best deal on a shaft, you might as well buy a whole cue...Lucky or Star.

No matter what shaft you buy, it probably won't match up perfect.

So your saying the shaft from a whole cue would fit better then a replacement shaft by itself? but either way they still wont match correctly?

It will fit better than a factory 2nd probably. If you get lucky, you'll get one that fits just right. If you can measure your joint, then someone can get you one that will match or be close.

The D series McDermott's are some of the best playing cues out there. Get a good shaft and you will not regret it!

Too bad it warped. I had a new Joss butt do the same thing and it was instantly worthless. If a new shaft fixes the problem, I'd go for it.

Send the butt to McD they'll make a shaft for it for between $80 and $130 brand new and it will match like new when you get it back. They'll rewrap it for you too

Send the cue to McDermott and have them make a shaft for it. You'll be happy you did. Also get a quote for a refinish. I have a D-15 from 1984 that seriously looks brand new after they refinished it. They do a great job and I think they enjoy seeing their older cues come in.

My buddy has a D-19 "valued" at over $1000, but couldn't get a bite for less than half that. Just saying.

I'd think it would be worth the effort because it was your dad's cue. Some things have a sentimental value far beyond their market value.

Toss in that McDermott cues play very well...and I'd say a no brainer. This one should be a keeper for you.

i'd say the d series is well known for the full spliced models d-10 and up. the d-1 thru d-9 are no big deal.

They are not full splice. They are short splice cues, as the handle is attached to the forearm and is not part of the spliced wood.
