McDermott shaft gets loose

I have a E-Series shaft that is 3/8X10 stainless joint that threads into wood shaft with no insert of any kind. It keeps coming loose and I didn't know if there was a way to fix it. Any ideas?

The pin is coming loose or the shaft from the butt? How tight are you making it? Like a new jar of Pickles is too tight. You don't want to go as tight as a pepsi big slam.
Could be the joint faces are not properly faced off.
If the surface area is corrupted then it could cause the shaft to come loose.

If you unscrew 1 turn does the shaft wobble a lot? Can you push in and out a lot? this will let you know if the threads are worn out.
How did you check the faces on the joints?
 
Even if the threads are a little loose this still should not be a cause of a shaft coming loose while playing. Irregardless if you believe the faces are good or not you should take the cue to someone with the equipment to re-face the shaft and joint as this is where your problem is.

I just checked the thread wobble compared to my Joss and Predator which are both piloted joints with brass inserts. There is no up and down on the McDermott but maybe a little more side to side wobble. I just eyeballed the faces looking for nicks and watched it screw together real close looking to see if one side hit first like maybe the pin was bent, Everthing looks ok. Jerry Olivier lives about 5 minutues from me he can check the faces. Thanks everyone for your help.

Dale if the threads are worn there are two ways to correct the problem. First any good cue repairman should be able to apply a little supper glue into the shaft wipe it around with a cue tip allow it to dry and run a tap through to clean up the excess.

If the thread are too far gone for this to hold, a Phenolic insert can be placed into the shaft, drilled and retapped. This is the perment way to correct the problem.

loose joint

I had a similar problem, I put a little cue wax on the pin and screwed it together several times to work it into the wood and it swelled the threads enough that I didn't have anymore problems.

That will also work, another thing people will do is apply a very small amount of water to a cue tip and apply it to the threads. When the wood expands and drys, they apply super glue and retap.
 
This is why I use an 11 pitch pin. The 10 pitch is on the edge of staying tight IMO. Like Dick said if you reface the joint of the cue, or rough it somehow, it will help the problem.

i pmed him that but i used an eyedropper. ive done it like a million times and never needed to reface (unless it was needed anyway)
