McDermott vs Sterling?

I'm new to the forum and I'm not 100% if this is the right section but..

I recently picked up a new cue so I am looking for a bigger case; I've narrowed it down to three.

sterling 2x4

The sterling and mcDermott will be the same price once I factor in s/h. I was leaning towards the sterling because there was more information regarding its construction but I know McDermott makes good quality items.

Actually all the cases you are looking at are made in China, and they may even be made in the same factory.

Quality is a funny thing while these companies do not advertize it it is a fact and it is becoming more and more so every day.

If, I were you I would do a little more research and be less concerned with what shipping and handling will cost you, that way you will get a quality item that will serve you well.

Check the billiardsware.com they sell a number of cues and cases and their prices are hard to beat, not to mention that they stand behind what they sell.

welcome to the forum.

I would go with the Sterling, which I believe has the great foam insert designed by John Barton (JB Cases) & he's a member and a great case maker. It's great protection and light weight. You may want to PM John to confirm the interior.

Thankyou for the input. I only listed the price info to show how the price between the two wasn't a factor in my decision, I just wanted the best case. I also tried that website and it wasn't active; are you sure that it is right?

Of the one's you mentioned I'd go with the Sterling. If you want to see what the interior of the case looks like full and empty go here:

I'll stick my nose in here. Sterling by a long shot here. Interior is a John Barton. He's doing them for sterling I believe. I spoke to him at the SBE. He showed me some prototypes he was doing for Sterling.. He told me he could do a custom Wave case for me in black and yellow. So I'm confident he is making them for Sterling.

So go with the Sterling. I am going to get a Wave case later on this fall for myself.

Thanks, it really did. I don't understand why companies would leave out pictures of one of the most important parts of a case.

You made a good choice. John does work for Sterling, and spends most of his time in China overseeing product development and quality control for cues and cases. You couldn't find a more knowledgable person to have in that position.

great choice the sterling will hold your cues very well if it has jbs interior.

the mcdermott is just a foam i used to have that case and it looks nice but the cues smack back in forth in there.

No problem. Those photos are actually from John's site JBcases. He's involved in the design of Sterling cases. I believe the interior on all Sterlings use a good quality interior. What is nice about them is not just that each cue piece is padded all the way around but my understanding is that they fit snugly. Not only does this keep the pieces from clanging around inside the case and perhaps getting damaged but maybe even more importantly - they won't come out of the case until you take them out. If you've ever picked up your case not realizing that it was open only to have a butt come sliding out and hit the floor or the edge of the table, you will find this a nice feature. :wink:

You made a great choice, IMHO. I have had my Sterling Wave 2x5/3x4 for close to 1.5 years now, and absolutely LOVE the Ultrapad Interior with the Organic Rebound System...it does exactly what John says it will do. Seriously, you can turn that sucker upside down, and the cues remain in place inside the case...turn it back upright, give a little upward shake, and they pop right up for easy access. I have zero concerns for the precious cargo cradled inside...I KNOW it's well protected.

It's really great that both John and Sterling can bring these upgraded interior cases at a price point most can afford...instead of reserving for the higher end cases.

CueSight Discount

Im glad to see the sterling case has such positive support.

I thought it would be a good idea to pass along a discount I came across when I was in the process of checking out. Its "take15off" and it works at CueSight.com on anything. It takes 15% off the final price, saved me $10 but could easily be worth more :wink: .

Also there is "CAT06" for OzoneBilliards. It only takes 5% off but that's better than nothing.

Hello i would go with the Sterling case the new cases that is same as the cases in the picture, the cases has a lot of great upgrades, inside the 16 inch pocket there is a sleeve for a jump handle. The tubes were replaced with padded sleeves for better safety and to reduce weight.
Here a plus if anything happens to the work parts on the case .
Just call Sterling let know of the problem and they will make it right .

I know because i sale all sterling products.

You made a great choice with the Sterling. Because anything John Barton is affiliated with is usually well built, ergonomic and quality driven.

Welcome to the forum. You'll not find a better place to learn about billiards than right here. I've learned so much from all these guys and gals, it's ridiculous.:grin:
