Measure your shotmaking level

Hey,

so I came up with this drill to measure your potting ability. It's as tough as possible, because the cueball is always on the rail. You have to play 24 balls and then compare how many you made by using this tableau.

I am curious how many balls you guys can make and what potting level the average AZB User has.

But please be honest and don't try it a hundred times and choose your best attempt. In the video I used my first try, even if I could have done better when trying it several times in a row.

Here is the link to the drill:

i look forward to trying this
the fact that the cue ball is frozen to the rail makes it tougher

Very good drill, actually this drill is called "Around the world drill" and is widely used in Europe to develop better feel for angle shots + straight stroke ;) I just dont get why we shouldnt run that drill 100 times when in the vid you say yourself that "usually when i start to play this drill i make the first 6,7,8 shots without any mistakes". You do understand that after doing this drill 100 times people WILL get better right?:grin::grin: IMO much better advice and meassurement of improvement would be actually to do that drill 100 times while writing down the results so you see the trend ;)

Real cool!

I'll be sharing this with all my team members, cant wait to try it myself as well. This is really good , Thanks for sharing!

Hey,

so I came up with this drill to measure your potting ability. ...
As a test, I think it is good.

However, I think it tests only one aspect of shotmaking. In that, it is like some drills where every object ball is frozen to the cushion. The shots don't represent the range of tough shots you have in competition.

For comparing players, I think you need the table difficulty factor. On some tables you normally avoid shooting a ball on the spot into the side pocket.

If you want to measure a facet of playing ability, I think a progressive practice setup will get you a more correct answer faster.

I practice rail shots a lot, and this is a good drill to add to my routine. I scored a 15 on my first attempt. My table is an 8' Diamond with pro-cut pockets. Not sure how many balls to knock off my score since it isn't 9'.

Thanks for posting this.

This skill level chart must be linked to pocket tightness for this to have any relative value. I assume your chart assumes a standard 5" corner pockets and 5-1/2" side pocket table? When you go to Diamond tour pocket sizes - 4-1/2" corners, 5" sides, that could easily alter your score by 5 or more points. An even tighter pocket table than that could alter your score by nearly 10 points, in my opinion.

I love the drill. I agree, player needs to go through drill several times a day on a regular basis time actually improve.

Also, you are correct, players in Europe have been doing this drill for some time.

Like i said, I do it often but, I only know a couple others here that actually do the drill or even know about it.

Tried it got a 14 on 9' GC, 4 1/2" pockets. I've always hated shooting off the rail, this drill may help that aspect of my game. It is tougher than it looks, barely missed several balls. Can be frustrating as you said in the video.

First attempt today:
10
13
14
=21

Second attempt today:

1
5
8
10
15
16
=18

I've did this drill many times in the past.

I've scored as high as 23 and as low as 14. So, it's one of those drills that DOESN'T tell much about potting ability unless you do it several times in a progressive manner as Bob was talking about.

Either way, like marek says, this is a drill they use a lot in Europe and that should tell you something about the importance of the drill.

Rake

Edit:

9' diamond pro-am
Pro cut pockets

I like the look of this drill. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know about the scoring. I would be against anybody in the world scoring 22 on a 9' diamond. I would be surprised if I made many more than 14-16. Then again, I try hard not to leave myself these shots because I think they're tough. Maybe if I do this drill for a while I'll change my opinion.

Thanks again!

If your talking an average of 22 I'm with you, I'm all in. Especially if it's an average of say, 10+ tries. That would be IMO about as strong as it gets.

I would like to see Dennis, Alex, shaw and all the other top shot makers attempt this.

It would be very interesting to say the least.

I like this one. Focuses on a much needed ability.
I'm going to try to avoid scratches as much as possible though when I try it.
Thanks for all your contributions on here!

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing I love the drills you post on the tube. I’ll give it a try the next chance I get. I hate rail shots so this will be good for me.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

The drill is meant to compare your own results and see your progress in shotmaking. It's hard to compare with other people, because of the different table settings. But it seems to me that Dr. Daves difficulty factor can be used to compare with other players here on AZB :)

Yea would be really interesting to see how the pro's would do on this drill. The only one I know in person is Ralf Souquet. Next time I see him I will ask if he ever did this drill and how many balls he's usally making.

I video recorded my first (and only) attempt. I scored a 14. Video below (edited for my short attention span).

I personally believe for a shotmaking test like this, you can practice it for a week straight, and not show significant improvement. Something like this comes down to pure hand-eye coordination. IMO of course;)

PS, if anyone claims these shots are easy (as you say some people might in your video), then those players are bangers. Even a C player knows these shots are super tough.
