what is the sub floor surface?

Right now the table is on 1/4” thick carpet tiles on concrete. But Trent, a lot of this already is past tense. When Glen asked if I was asking a question I figured I would ask something that will be a future move. I will never sell this table. Ever. Even if I put it in storage for a bit I would never sell it. So assuming we will move soon to a larger home that will have enough space to not only house my table in a specific room or build out but, also house a space large enough for my business and my hobby of model railroading I figured I would ask the question about the studs and the cross member bolt torque. I am not moving it tomorrow. But maybe in a year? At that point and possibly before that point I do have a couple things I want to correct on the table but, I am not going to do them till I need to recover the table. So believe it or not I am trying to wear the cloth out. Using this opportunity to practice jump shots etc.

Let me ask you a couple of questions now. So from what I understand as of right now, you're looking for as much free knowledge as you can gather from the .mechanics here in this forum, so that sometime in the future, you may...or may not move to another house and would want to take your pool table with you. Meanwhile, you'd like to learn about working on your pool table, so that when the day comes to replace the cloth, you can do a check up on the frame bolts and tighten them to a specific torque, but you don't know what that torque number is, so you're asking now, so that sometime in the future you'll know what to do.

I'm just curious, when you bought your table new, did you have it set up by someone, or did you yourself set it up? How long ago did you buy this table?

No Glen,

That’s not what I am asking for at all. You don’t have to give me any information at all if you don’t like. The table is setup and has been setup and yes I (we) set it up myself. It was a father son project and we had a great time and put in a lot of hard work.

You asked me if I had a pool table question so I presented you with a couple of questions that will lean towards the move at some point. If the table doesn’t move in my lifetime then I will give that information to my son. The table was purchased a little over a year ago new. In the boxes.

You can wire brush the threads of the levelers and oil them. Do you have these?

They are awesome to help leveling. As for the torque on the frame members: There are few parts on your table you can wrench on like a car and the frame member is one of them. When assembling the frame on any GC I make sure those bolts are as tight as I can make them. I hope this helps.

You ever had to replace a snapped off frame bolt in the anchor nut in the frame of a GC? I have, it's not pretty! Those 1/2" bolts max out at about 50ft lbs!!

Never had that problem yet, but, I am not a BEAR like you are!! LOL :)

Trent

P.s. So happy the trouble has been banned. :grin-square:

p.s.s. thanks for answering thinslices torque question more accurately!

Just think about this, you can't tighten a bolt beyond it's designed hardness, and course thread requires less torque than fine thread does.

Ok, this is making more sense to me now, but I'd rather answer questions over the phone because I hate typing on anything!!

Hi Glenn/Trent,

I will answer both responses here.

Trent, I have the quick set levelers. They are installed and of course they make things much easier. I also believe that they now come with the newer tables. But even then if the threads are not clean they need to be worked in. I figured you both had done a ton of these installs so it was just a basic question assuming you had a technique. Appreciate the responses thanks.

Glen, thanks for the cross member bolt torque specification. 50lbs is what it will be when I do it next time. Could be six months and could be a year. Hard to tell. Have had some pretty challenging things happy in my life recently so not sure when or if it will move. If I had my choice it would be very soon. I will call soon. Not today but soon. I am the type that likes to plan for these things and the next re-covering will require a little work. Most of it will be surrounded around pocket castings and an alignment process of the rails. Love my table. Just want to tweak a few things.

Thank you both!

PS...I never find pleasure in seeing people get banned. It helps no one although it may seem as though it does temporarily.

Are you aware of my Simonis cloth installation DVDs, covering GC's?

Yes I own a set of the DVD’s. I would say I hold my own on the rails but the bed I struggle with. Especially using the glue down method. Let’s put it this way. I feel I do a decent job but there is always room for improvement. The stretch side pocket is always a challenge for me and trying to get the table as tight as I like it is difficult. Tried a 3 inch stretch index and that was just too difficult. So I settled in on 2.5. This is not my 1st table. It’s like my 4th. So I have a touch of experience.

Even I only install Simonis 860HR with a 1 3/4" stretch side to side, so you're misunderstanding something. I'm getting ready to do a glue down bed cloth on a GC1 slate this Sunday, once I finish with editing it, it'll be on the web for free.

Ok. It’s been a while. Over a year since I thought much about it. What I do is I clamp Donne the non-stretch end. Then on the other side I pull my max pull as recommended. Before hand I would have marked it un-stretched. I mark the max pull. Then back it off and mark it according to how much of a pull I want to accomplish. I can get more than 3. But it’s not practical. So I tried 3 and it was almost impossible. So 2.5 is my index. That’s not exactly simple either but it’s achievable for a novice like myself. That’s the process I use.

I'd be willing to bet that with one side clamped in place, and you pulling from the opposite side, you can't stretch that 860 3" across with your bare hands.
