Meet My Coaches

My video camera shows me everything I do wrong.
It's up to me to correct it.

My voice recorder records all my thoughts and ideas about my game in real time.
So as I don't forget anything important.

I don't need a real live person to show and tell me these things.
There are plenty of books and instructional videos available.
And I can see exactly how it's done watching YouTube videos of the greatest players of all time.
Not to mention the great commentators from Accu-Stats.

Of course, there are many techniques and nuances that can make or break your game.
If a coach knows of them, perhaps they will share that knowledge.

But this is really good for now and just fine for me.
In about another week I'll post another mini-demo and we can all see my progress.

Until then...

thats why another set of educated eyes is useful

I use video all the time to make sure that I am continuing to stay on the right path and to also see what I am still lacking in proper mechanics, timing, etc. As someone mentioned, you also need to know what to look for in your approach to a shot and your resulting stroke. - yes, some books and the internet are very helpful along those lines; but, no doubt, the very best pool stroke trainers would be a valuable asset in conjunction with your video reviews.

No offense meant, but you need live instruction to improve faster. I have pros and teachers comment on my game, and I do the same for theirs. Tiger Woods has a coach(es), and I’ve put pool pros into testing systems and stroke machines.

Are there any instructors that you would recommend who would coach based on video recordings?

As I reviewed a recorded session ...I saw myself rushing the stroke. Was not holding the backswing. Managing the table was different story. I recored various lessons I took and a few games. Damn I need help😂

Well thanks for the reminder, I have a DVD around here somewhere from a 1st place finish. 🤔 Yeah that figures to be my best form. So see if and where I have changed might be interesting as it's over 10 years old. 🤔

My largest gain over the shortest time came with $20/hrs paid lessons. One a week with 1 hour per day practice. And NO Gambling for 6 weeks.
Started with The Basics and stance was first.Well after survey. Develop a personal dance but the style that optimized gravity has a longer shelf life. 🤷‍♂️ wink.
I recall the "pump handle stroke " pronounced on Efren when he was steam rolling the money players. Playing back to back sets. He lost one of 10 and it was to Buddy Hall. 🤷‍♂️

Necessity is the Mother of invention.
Off handed should get a practice.
My off handed development began at an age (uh 10 to 12 years maybe) when I broke my right arm twice. Well left handed was like 🤔 A whole New Piece of Hand. 😉
Not better or worse. Just different. Throwing a baseball was hardest. 🤷‍♂️
My pool playing has proofed the validity as Lefty has only lost once. And that set up a 10 fold winner at next skirmish. 🤷‍♂️

And oh yeah learning to write left handed too. Which brings a story. 🤷‍♂️ But true. A Dear family friend could take pencil in each hand and write mirror image in beautiful script. She played the piano and organ without a script. Played by ear and oh so beautiful. Mrs Kenny.

I had a friend that wrote the same way if I understand you correctly. He wrote left handed and backwards at the same time as writing right handed. The left hand text was at least equal to the right hand other than being backwards. I would be stretching things to describe writing from either hand as beautiful! One thing I checked, his right hand writing didn't degrade when writing with the left hand at the same time.

I think the original purpose of the thread has been covered. Long distance review can go a long ways, as can reviewing video yourself. Often reveals issues a person would swear they didn't have! However, nothing beats real time instruction by a well qualified instructor.

There is an old saying that a doctor that diagnoses his own health issues has a fool for a patient. A bit harsh and I wouldn't go that far but the basic thought is sound. You can't diagnose your own issues as well as a good instructor can and the camera only gives one view.

Blackjack on here used to give video analysis. He would have people shoot the same shot ten times then reposition the camera and shoot the same ten shots again. I think he used three angles, maybe more. I lost touch with him long ago, I don't know if he still does this. David Sapolis if I didn't butcher the spelling. Good guy and very sharp pool player. Back when he was active on here he would have been my first choice. Not sure if he is still available. Then again, a friend is a local instructor. Never paid him but we spent many hours together on a table playing with things. Scott Lee and I played around together on a table a few times too. Never had a paid lesson but that is only because by the time I was aware of instructors I was also aware my time for pool greatness was past! In my seventies, maybe I'll come out smoking if somebody starts a super senile league!(grin)

Sometimes one sentence is pure gold. It will take someone else to say that sentence.

You mentioned Lee so I'll venture the you don't know what you don't know axiom.

Anyway - and truthfully, I found Lee insulting and annoying RIP. (That should make me more friends huh?) That's only texting in the Aim Pit so maybe my bad.

I find Johnson a curiosity. Pigheaded enough. Does he know anything? Waiting...

Yes that's it.

I concur. 👍
Even Ronnie O'Sullivan spent time with coaches. The other view point can be helpful even to an accomplished player. IMHO it is important to accept the authority of the chosen coach and give their coaching full attention. Sometimes it might be tempting to uh relate to other players a unorthodox method. I think that's a big No No. They will often find a need to discredit. Anything less than full commitment to the coach and their guidance can lead to unsatisfactory results.
My 6 weeks 6 lessons at 20 per was one of my best investments of money And time. An hour a day done properly can build a strong competitor.

Take what you can use and leave the rest.😉

One big flaw I see is trying to piece mill skills. Take one bit from one player, another bit from a different player. The bits assembled from a bunch of great players often adds up to crap. Several different things I competed at, I found it best to try to learn from or copy one strong player. If I ever got where I could beat them then maybe I focused on another player to learn from. A bunch of instructors results in the same deal. Find one instructor and put your trust in them. If the time comes to move on that is fine but don't listen to a bunch of voices at once.

Piece mill - I'd always heard this as piece meal. Peace meal makes no sense. :ROFLMAO:

A Camel is a horse built by committee. 🤷‍♂️
My favorite analogy.
The build it yourself program is a beginning. Getting lucky with the choice of lessons is Huge.
Just a factor as the fear factor training is uh forged in fire.
I tried to balance my schedule with a lessons budget that allowed the less than 10 percent of the weekly small $5 tournaments and 1 and 2 ring games income.

I had some music theory and without getting into irrelevant detail, there are many problems where you start solution first. Probably goes for architecture and anything else it fits.
