Melvin Sharp resurfaces in Denver!

Colorado small-time tournament players will know Melvin, a remarkable player with a big heart and even bigger liver. ScottW and I reminisced about him in the thread about playing drunks. It's been five years since anyone I know has seen him.

Saturday night, at the Tarantula Billiard Cafe' (15th & Champa, upstairs), I was alone practicing blind shots. Guy asks if I want a few games of 9-ball. Sure.

"How about a race to 5 for $20?" That made me open my eyes to regard him.

"Oh, Hell, why don't I just lend you my ATM card and PIN, Melvin?"

He's changed, much for the better. Lost about 40 pounds and the jaundice. He doesn't stagger or slur now, although he had a half-empty pitcher of beer. If not for the bug eyes and flat, three-inch wide nose, I might be short several Jacksons.

Melvin says he's at Tarantula's most evenings these days. He's waiting to return to Shakespeare's when it re-opens at its new location, 2620 Walnut Street. So am I. I drove by there Friday to see how it's coming along. I'd give it about three more weeks; nothing but plywood on the facade and a jumble of construction materials inside right now.

That dude plays a pretty good speed of bar pool while consuming the suds. Saw him play at a Vegas bar tourney a few times.

Glad to hear Melvin's cleaning up some... he was on a fast track to an early death by liver failure from what I could tell :/

And the last time I saw him was just this past May... he must have really been at it since then if he's changed that much since then.

Maybe Shakespeare's 2.0 will be open by the time I'm back in town in late September...

Anybody in Denver remember a guy named Don Beard?
Chuck

That name sounds real familiar to me, but I just can't place it.
I lived in Denver for 30 years have played Melvin many, many times. Never a champ, but a fair bar player. Couldn't play dead on a big table.

I was lucky to spend about 5 years around Melvin when he was cold sober. Nice honest guy who could play REAL good at times. I saw him giving all comers a crazy spot on a barbox one time. Racking 9-ball, he was solids, other guys was stripes (9 & 8). Melvin had to bank every ball, in rotation. He was running racks and robbing people. That was the first time I saw him. Sucker's bet, but the bank in rotation made it a little harder for him and the fact that he was breaking and running that way was pretty impressive.

One time I saw him and loaned him $5. He moved to Albuquerque, then Las Vegas, then I ran into him again about 3 years later, before he even said 'HI' he was handing me $5.

I never have seen him drink or been around him when he was drunk. I heard he was back in Denver. Glad to hear he's cleaned up a little.

Cheers,
RC
