Mesa, AZ - Anybody around there ? Help Needed for a PLAYER

No money, no transportation and no place to live soon. My suggestion is go down to the public assistance office and go on welfare/food stamps for awhile till he gets back on his feet. They'll help finding him a job and a place to live. A portion of our tax dollars are used for this purpose, he should take advantage of this program.

Its a good idea but you would have to know JR (Leil). Thats a program he would never use. He's the kind of guy that will borrow a little dough from you then do everything possible to pay you back. And YES, I would bet my life that unless he died you would get your money back. Leil is also 50% Sioux Indian and he has never taken advantage of any of the programs offered by the Tribe. He is truly a rare find.

Anyway, again he's not looking for money. His close friends will always help him with that. What he wants is a steady job so he can put his feet down somewhere and prosper.

Along those lines he got hooked up with a job today thanks to a friend from AZ. It only pays $9.50 an hour but he's happy (and proud) to be working. He starts the new job on Friday.

He wanted me to say thanks for everyones help, concern and advice.

I understand. There are many, many individuals that scam to get this assistance and don't need it at all. I'd like to see someone who really needs the help get it.

Mr Flanigan, your compassion is only equaled by your lack of a reading comprehension.

I'm truly sorry that my lack of compassion bothers you. My reading comprehension is fine, thank you. I have dealt with people like the one you are "trying" to help all my life. they talk a good game, but have little or no intention of changing.

I have had to refuse too many so called "friends" in my time on this earth, because they wanted money to "buy groceries", yet they refused my purchasing food for them.simply put, they would have gambled it away or bought alcohol with the money and hit me or someone else up as soon as the money was gone. (usually the next day)

maybe your friend could use some tough love and a simple refusal. JMHO

and the name is Flanagan, maybe your reading comprehension needs fine tuning, too ! ;)

Glad to hear it. I'll still try to make it up there to play him or get some lessons from him, if he has time. Another great 1-hole player close by is always a welcome addition.

Tell him to check out Kolbys Corner Pocket in Tempe,i am sure if he has a few bucks he can get a game there and maybe make a score.I wish him the best of luck in the struggle. ;)

Scott Frost is usually available for 1-hole action. I would like to watch them match up, but it sounds like gambling isn't the answer. I think i might know some people looking for some lessons. I will ask around and get back to you.

Also like AZhousepro said, there is a big tourny at Alexanders this weekend, 1st place will probably pay anywhere from $1500 - $2000.

Mr. Flanagan, do you know Leil or are you just making rude comments about someone that is obviously down on his luck?

When I talked to him last night he said he called many and was also trying to work for a Day-2-Day Temp agency but because he has no car he keeps getting passed over for jobs.

Believe me, when I sold his Cogniscenti here in the AZ forums and gave him the 2+G's and he told me he was heading out West to find a Job. I had no doubt he would do everything he could to make it work. He didn't go broke from gambling, in fact he didn't gamble at all. The expenses ate up his money. he's trying, he could just use a little luck right now.

I mean c'mon, think about it. What jobs are there for a guy that has been playing pool at the professional level full time since the Camel Tour ?

I can see the application now. When was your last job.... um 1992?

Leil played professionally on the WPA. He traveled to Spain, Taiwan and Germany on that tour. He then played on the Camel Tour and the IPT along with many of the regional tours. Before that he took his 1st road trip at the age of 8 with his dad then was on the road FULL TIME when he was just 15. He's 50 now.
He should put that on his resume...I mean really...that's what he did so........

I fully well understand where Unkle Jackie is coming from. I refuse to donate or enable someone's habit. I'm not buying an alcoholic a drink, a smoker a pack of cigarettes, and I'm not going to give a gambler a stake.

Maybe the all play and no work of some pool hustlers occasionally pays off, but where's the safety net when he's down on his (luck)(skill)( ? ).

I played in a tourney Saturday night. There was one hustler and one wannabe/upcoming hustler in the tourney. The hustler went two and out. His follower, the wannabe, had the misfortune of playing me in the 3rd round and he was out, too. One of them has no car; neither has a job. Do I feel sorry or compassionate toward them ? NO !

I work, have worked since I was 12. I have played some form of pool since that same age. Have I been out of work ? YES ! , But I have saved and not gambled away my "earned" dollars. A job and responsibility comes before play ! I don't understand where this message did not get across to a lot of people in this world.

I have played pool off and on most of my life, "d". I was unlucky enough to meet up with a hustler or two in my early life..........a hard lesson learned is a lesson remembered..........

I saw how the guys who hustled actually lived and wanted no part of that life. living in their cars, etc. I had some place to call home, clean clothes and regular bath. Sure, I wanted my money back; but I moved on,
grew up, got a job with a retirement.

40 or so years later, I still play pool, enjoy seeing it played on TV, but see less and less of men's pool on USA TV. who's to blame, no one person can be totally blamed for the state that pool us in currently. JMHO, the IPT and Kevin Trudeau had a major stake in turning off a lot of venues on TV because of the flim-flam, scam that was taken by them.

I'm sorry that those with a stake in the IPT dealings are still clinging to the hope of a revival. ......gonna take more than an itinerant Baptist preacher to preach that revival......
