Mexicans playing pool

So I get home yesterday and a team of Mexicans were cutting my grass. I went outside to pay them and I overhear them talking about shooting pool. I told them that I play pool and I would play one of them for the grass cutting money. I was only paying them $50 anyway. After speaking a few bars of spanish one of them tells me that he will play.

I told them to finish up, it looked like they were almost done with the weed-eating and I would be back outside in a few minutes. This would give me time to grab a bite to eat, play briefly with my daughter, and take a dump.

So I get back outside and they are loading their gear on the back of their regular cab '81 toyota. I asked,"are we gonna play?". Miguel, the one that was gonna play said, "si", lol, actually he said yes, but in my mind he said "si". They said we could play at the Mexican billiard place. I didn't even know our area had such a thing, but sure enough it was a neat little place with 2 bar boxes. The front of the building had a big 8-ball on it with "Billar" written in big graffiti.

Anyway, to make a long story short, we played 8-ball for $25 a game. I won the first two games and they quit. Im not sure if they will make the same deal next week.

They like to gamble. I once played a group of Latinos in North Carolina. They could not speak a bit of English, I simply pulled a 20 out of my pocket and they shook there heads yes, we played and I won about 400 or so. Every game they would just pull out a different bill and we would put it in the corner pocket and play the game. I never experienced anything like it and still haven't to this day. They tried to get me to play some game they play in whatever country they were from, and I declined. They put all the balls on the diamonds but i'm not sure what the rules or object was.

Are all three of these essential to good pool playing? If so, does it have to be done in that specific order? Does this combination only work against Mexicans, or are all nationalities covered?

Thanks for your help.

Now I can't wait for league night. ;)

Carombollas is very big. They love to play. I play my guys all the time, but I won't gamble with them because A-they work with me, and B- it's so one sided it is not even funny. I used to go to one of the houses where they lived, they would back me against any one of their friends that wanted to bet. I shot one handed and the table rolled bad and they still lost. But they smiled and laughed the whole time.

I also play a Mexican gin game they taught me. It's played with a very funky card deck. Conquillan or some name similar. It is a good switch from poker and we play 1 buck a hand.

You're lucky you didn't get your ass beat. But literally.

lol, two of them are 65 years old and the other two are about 4 feet tall. I'm 6'2' and they have cut my grass for 3 summers now. They also cut the grass at my dad's business and my uncle's business. Getting my ass beat was never in the equation.

Thats just what I do every day when I get home from work.

Mexicans and Asians do seem to love to gamble. I have won a lot of money playing Mexican Rotation, Last Pocket Eight Ball and Various Carom/Pin games.

I ususally go into a place and play whatever game they are playing. I love to learn new games and try to figure them out. I don't even need to hustle, just play and they play until they don't want to play anymore. I have been in places where they just keep coming with more and more players.

Rafael Martinez showed me some shots that come up in Mexican Rotation that were mind blowing. It's no wonder that he plays so great after becoming a champion in that game.

For those that don't know Mexican Rotation is played with all the balls placed along the diamonds and the three ball starting on the foot spot. The three counts as six since the one and two are not used. Forst player to make 61 points wins. Points are given based on the ball's number.

I love that card game!

I worked at a carwash for 8yrs or so and we would play on our down time, just like you 1 or 2 dollars a game. Those were the days.

A Hispanic player once told me that they call the game "pool". I believe they attempt to hit the lowest numbered ball first and yes, all of the balls are planted on the diamonds around the table. I THINK they keep score of the points on the numbered balls as I see many of the players at my pool hall trying to carom into balls that I normally wouldn't go after and most of the time they opt for the higher numbered balls it seems.

They play the game with as many as 8 players in the game at one time. They haven't invited anyone else to play except the ones in their group. They don't play very well and I would feel badly taking advantage of them so I would kindly decline their offer if asked.

I played a form of rotation with some of the Mexicans that hang out in my home poolroom. Over a week or so, I probably was up around $7-800? They just kept sending other players in. Damndest thing I'd ever seen. Although I was winning almost every game, they weren't a bit mad. They kept telling me, "you shoot good." I haven't seen them for about two or three weeks, though. I hope I didn't run'em off. They actually called a fella the last time. He could play, too. Twenty a game with ten on the side. It really took some concentration to beat the guy.

Joey, all is true that you mentioned. They love to gamble, but refused to get robbed. LOL At least in the NEW YORK area.

Years ago I played w/ a bunch of Dominicans in Washington Hieghts Uptown Manhattan. They were all drug dealers and had a mad amount of money. They were not worried about getting stuck, they just did not want to be hustled.
I remember Frankie Hernandez also taking these "DRUG DEALERS" off many a time, also.....It wasnt really hard, just be there friend and dont run no racks, plus we speak Spanish....LOL Oh!!!!those were the days.....LOL LOL

It sounds like u are really proud of yourself

So you steal $50 of hard earned money from either struggling immigrants or illegal immigrants that work for you and your family and you are proud of that? Once you found out you were actually stealing you should have given them the money back. It is people like you I bar from my pool room and have in the past. You think it is funny, I think it is pathetic. You do not hustle people that work for you. You certainly add to the bad reputation of pool. You set a great example. Are you really so proud of yourself you have to post that on this forum.
By the way did you deduct S.S. and workmens comp payments?

And for all you people that might disagree with this, remember these were people that "works for him".

lmao,
I am certain that these guys are illegal because they said I had to pay them in cash. I am a C player at best so by no means did I think I was stealing and I would have lost a couple of hundred to them. Also, I happen to think that all illegal immigrants should be shipped back to where they came from asap... do not pass a flea market, do not collect $50.

I could care less if the money they lost to me would have gone to groceries, drugs, lotto tickets, etc... If you can't afford to lose then don't play.

If they do happen to get deported then would you like to come and cut my lawn each week? Since you are legal then I will pay you $60, minus taxes of course.

You are a piece of work, arent you?

You just don't get it do you? The point is they work for you and your family. Should I hustle all my employee's?
Also if you feel the way you do, why are you hiring them? No one else will cut your lawn, right?
And by the way I would gladly come and cut your lawn if you promise to play me too. But it has to be for a lot more.
And if they are illegal and you and your family are paying under the table then what does that make you? A hypocrite.

they work for about 50 different people, all of whom pay them under the table. The way I see it, if they are gonna be here anyway, taking advantage of our health and education systems, then I might as well get cheap labor out of it.

Does anyone else see the irony in this statement?

Your comments are, at best, conflicting (see above statement), stereotypical (you've grouped all "Mexicans" together when you really don't know their origins), and racist (see above statement - flea market, etc...). And I realize that your response to this will be to counter everything I've said, but grouping all ethnic groups together is hard to be construed as anything other than racist. But this will probably fall on deaf ears anyways. IMO, you don't have very much class for starting a thread like this. But, that is JMO.
