I'm looking for expert opinions on Micarta ferrules. I recently hit with a Southwest that micarta ferrules and loved the hit. I just don't know how much of that has to do with the ferrule but would appreciate any feedback, positive or negative.

Thank you,
Koop

They were light ( paper based ) and hard imo.
Nice hit, low deflection.
No longer made though.

Yes Sir, They hit pretty good, I know someone has some,
hmmmm, who was it, I can't remember,

And I thought you were going to tell me that you had some :-)

BTW, I'm still in awe at how well John's Webb cue played.
Hey John, if you read this, don't turn your back cause that baby may disappear :D

I know knife makers use micarta a lot so I am pretty certain you can buy micarta rod and make your own if you can do ferrule work. However, there are different grades of micarta, paper based and linen based. Linen based has small swirl marks that look a little like wood grain and paper based looks a lot like ivory.

are you talking about the yellow, asbestos micarta.

i luv it! found some a few years ago to put on an old dpk authenticated SW.

micarta ferrule

As far as the difference in the hit. I has a cue that Jerry Franklin made for me years ago. Had the yellow micarta ferrules. Let a friend of mine use it for about a month. He dneted the shaft and proceeded to sand it down until it was about 11 1/2 mm. Cue wasnt the same. Lost its stiffness. Had another shaft made with their new material and never played the same.

Micarta is Westinghouses or GEs trade name for phenolics I believe. At any rate there are many types of Micarta with different bases as it is made for the electronics industry. The old Yellow Micarta that everyone seems to worship was asbestos based and of coarse is no longer made. A number of years ago, I'm told, a knife makers supply house offered Westinghouse a 30,000 order to make one more run of it and they were blew off as they said it would cost 10 times that amount for the clean-up afterwards. Years ago when Sherm and myself were partners we hade a block of it about 1" by 6" by 12". It was enough for about 150 ferrules. It was hard to get by then but we sold it to Richard Harris for 100.00 by mistake. Thinking we could sell the ferrules for at least 10.00 each I quickly thought in my head that would come out to 150.00 and I figuired for 50.00 I'd let Richard cut it up and make ferrules. It wasn't until the next day that it dawned on me of my 1350.00 miscaculation. This was about 14 or 15 years ago. Right now I have a buddy who has a little and he sells .625 X .625 X 1" for a 100.00 a piece. I told him I thought that price was a little ridiculous as Ivory is only about 12 or 13.00 but he says there's plenty ivory out there but when the yellow Micarta is gone it's gone.

Which come back to the question.. Which cuemaker could still make a micarta ferrule shaft for a Southwest? i have a Jerry Franklin also with that micarta ferrule and it would be nice if i can have a spare shaft...

ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY FROM THIS ITEM ON EBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are not micarta as stated. The seller is a ***** and is not worth dealing with. I bought about 600 dollars worth of those ferrules just to learn that they are not the asbestos based micarta that they used to make. Micarta is yellow and will always be yellow unless freshly cut then turn yellow after a few days. I got stuck 100 just to break the deal with these scammers and got a refund of myother 500. These ferrules you can buy at atlas for 3-4 dolalrs a ferrule. Don't buy any.
