Micarta ferrules

I like the look of the ferrules on my '85 Schon that Bob Runde made for me. There's just a tint
of yellowing, almost like with old pool balls, and the shade looks really cool. I mean it should right?
My cue is almost 30 years old and I don't want it to look like a new cue......that's part of my cue's appeal.

I had an old Biagio cue, which was made by Helmstetter, and I thought that it had a Micarta ferrule on it, because it was very Yellow.

I had a Pro do a deep cleaning to the shaft, because it was filled with small dicks / dings, and was also very dirty, and after the cleaning, the ferrule was no longer Yellow.

It turned into an off white color after the deep cleaning, and I was kind of bummed to learn that it was not a Micarta ferrule.

They didn't use Micarta. It was a thermoset plastic that yellowed on the same chemical reaction as Micarta.

Here's a photo of my favorite shooting shaft, complete with an old-school Micarta ferrule... shown opposite my custom DJ (Dave Jones) cue's ivory points and "Crown" rings. All white is ivory.

Dave made the matching shaft for me some years back. It's made from a Timeless Timber of Ashland, Wisconsin blank. It plays beautifully. The shaft wood is very dense, and the grain is very straight. The 30" shaft weighs 3.7 oz. even though it has a pro taper and a 12.5 mm ferrule.

Once I had another cue maker put a Micarta ferrule on a Gina Shaft.

Took it out to Ernie's and he was not having it.

With a metal joint I didn't like the feel of an ivory ferrule.

With a wood or ivory joint it feels more organic.

Pros could care less about ivory ferrules.

They do look good and clean up nice.
