ABOUT MIKE,

Many are wondering if Mike builds his high end line of cues. YES, he builds them at his shop in Orlando, Fl. I sold Mike his cue machinery and equipment several years ago. Mike owns a billiard suppy house in Orlando, named, MIKE SIGEL'S WORLD CLASS CUES, INC. he also sells his import cues from this same location. Billiard supply in the front of his building, and cue shop in the back.

To Tony,
HOW MIKE GOT THE NAME "CAPTAIN HOOK"..........

Mike got his nick name, "captain hook" from the late great champion, Jack, "jerrsey red" Brite. Jack gave him this name because of his abbility to "hook" the guy he was playing. Mike is also the owner of over 100 titles in his carrer. Mike lives in Orlando with his wife Renne and his young son, Spencer.

Mike is also an avid fisherman. He walks to the back of his property and catches big bass.

Janice and I have been guest at his home many times. Beautiful home and grounds. We have known Mike for 30 plus years. Very proud to be friends with him. Mike is a hard worker and builds a very nice cue.

That is good to hear that he isn't just letting them use his name. I use to love watching him play years back, but his comentating needs some work. He comes off as bitter!

That poor lake is getting built around too much. Soon there will not be a lot left in it.

You forgot to mention Golf. Mike loves golfing. :) I asked him once if he was excited about teaching his son (still a toddler) how to play pool. LOL, Mike shrugged "OK", and then said he cannot wait to get him on the golf course.

If you ever get a chance to go to his shop, go. He is sometimes hard to catch but when he is there he is a great person to talk with. He has a bit of an ego, but it is well earned. If you can get past that, I think Mikes only disadvantage is that he will not stop talking. :) I love it. I have spent a couple hours in his shop just watching him work on his cues. The first time I went in, I needed some work on my joint. He fixed it while I was there and he was talking so much he just moved on to his own stuff and continued. It was pretty kewl just hanging around shooting the bull. :)

Does anyone have any photos of Mike Siegel's Custom Cues? I've seen the production imported cues, but never his custom cues.

Try this page from his website:

Occasionally one will come up on ebay also. All of the ones I've seen were pretty ornate, lots of malachite and ivory inlays. I don't recall ever seeing any with spliced/veneered points.

I've spoken with Sigel several times - "ego" isn't the word for his attitude. I think "pompous ass" might work okay though.

I was surprised that people justified his attitude by noting that he is a decent player - being a professional pool player isn't exactly something that should enormously swell the ego. I strongly doubt that he gets the recognition of a Tiger Woods or Allen Iverson. Its more likely, in fact, that nobody knows him outside of a poolroom. Not to mention that his cues are the most horrible looking things ever intentionally created. I always wondered what he was thinking while he was making a cue - perhaps he is reminiscing about his days with finger paints...

I'm sorry Joe Mamma, did you say Sigel was a decent player? I think it may be time to have your eyes checked. He's probably in the top 2 or 3 of the best players of all time."Decent" GET HELP

Larry,
There is no doubt that Sigel is a great player. I actually own the Sigel-Zuglan tape that you mentioned, and it is amazing. However, in every interaction that I have had with Sigel, he has been completely arrogant. It annoys me that people dismiss this as talent (i.e. you and Blud)because I have met and known many great players who don't have this difficulty. I have had the opportunity to buy his cues at a variety of expos, but I refuse to even look at them because of his personality (not to mention they're ugly). Although it is VERY arguable that Sigel is one of the top 2 or 3 players ever, he is most definitely one of the bottom 2 or 3 cue salesmen. If you are trying to sell someone a $3600 cue, there is no need for the customer to kiss the salesman's ass. If anything, it should be the other way around.

Unfortunately, good pool players don't get the recognition of hollywood celebrities. If Sigel goes into a smokey poolroom, he might get some admiration. However, to the great majority of the world, he is just a middle-aged pompous assh**e.

I met Mike in the Greenway in Baton Rouge in 1974 and have gambled with and against him sense. Everyone has bad days but Mike Sigel is a lot of fun, has a great personality and from other people I know makes a great cue.

With a handle like "Jo Mama" one would assume that this guy looks for the worst in everyone and enjoys starting trouble.

Bill,
I have no intention of looking for the worst in people. It would seem, however, that even the Sigel fans have already acknowledged that he has a swollen ego. There is a difference between "looking for the worst" and "acknowledging the truth". Simply because I have criticized him, does not mean that I am starting trouble. I have only expressed my experience with Sigel, and I don't think that his talent can be used as a substitute for a bad attitude as some have asserted.

It would seem that you are trying to "spin" my posting. My handle has nothing to do with it. It simply happens that my name is Joe and that is the screen name which I chose. Whether or not you like it, I don't care.

I believe you are both right........Hemi is closer to right and makes more sence. Sigel has a odd personality.....which comes off as pompas to some I guess.....but not to people that know him. I know some people like that, and can see the same thing in Mike. He is a great player.......( not in the top 3 or 4 )....but one of the top. Everyone has people that think bad of them or think they are aholes. I just don't think he needs to comentate pool on TV.............leave that for the best of them all.....Allen Hopkins.

Everyone play nice. It is ok to tell someone that you don't agree with them about a topic. Just don't tell them that they are an idiot because of their opionion.

Thanks,

Mike

Well for all the people on here think Mike Sigel can't play think again. I went to Orlando last September and spent a week with him to take lessons. Mike is a great guy, but there’s one thing about it he not only can brag about what he has done in pool and for pool but if he says anything (brags) believe me he can still do it. The man showed me moves on the pool table that you can only imagine the way this man thinks when he's at the table. And one other thing and I say this for myself as well to anyone else GO and do what Mike Sigel has accomplished in pool and then you may BRAG about how you played, who you beat, whatever it may be quit sitting on this board bashing what someone else has accomplished in their life. DO WHAT HE HAS DONE IN POOL then you have every RIGHT to talk just like he does. His records speak for themselves. The man at times played flawless the best pool anyone on the face of the earth could play. And I'm not saying he could still dominate the game like he once did but you can take it to the bank if he still played everyday like he did then he would still be a favorite at any tournament.

And I'm not defending Mike in any way but as bad as you may not like it, he was a World Class Player and he did what a lot of people will never do in pool. Look at the record books they speak for themselves.

You could say the same thing about a lot of the best poolplayers in the world but Mike Sigel was one of the greatest pool players to ever play the game.

Just like he told me and if you don’t believe me call him or ESPN. In 15 appearances in the finals on ESPN he finish 1st – 12 times 2nd – 3 times. You can just line all of todays champion pool players in line and name one player that can beat that record. You find me a bookie or a casino to put a line on this man I’m betting all my money on him.

I don't know Mike Sigel but I do know that he was a champion pool player. I personally like his commentating, sorry. Also, I don't believe you have to be a nice guy to have been a champoin at anything. Look at John Mc Enroe from tennis. He was a champion and he certainly didn't appear to be a model citizen. Who really cares? He was a great pool player, end of story. Why do people have to bicker about their opinions? Everyone has a right to have one, after all, this is America right? Chill out people!

I just wish the bloody guy would get off his duff and play in some tournaments again. He was at the BCA championships selling cues at a booth while 200 yards away a pro event was going on. I know that is an invite only tournament but if Siegel called up the BCA and said "Can I play?" they would be happily writing his name down on the roster. The reason for him quiting pool was totally about the money (or lack thereof). He could have left his assistant working at the booth or hired someone else for 15 bucks an hour while he was playing the tournament and won quite alot of cash for winning that tournament (25,000 for first or so I think in that one). Winning that tournament would have been more cash then he made in cue sales that week I would venture to guess.

I did not even go watch the pros play that week, it was kind of a boring format and many had been in my home town not too long before that. If Siegel had been in the field I would have payed the money to go watch him play though. That guy is wasting an extreme amount of skill that most people in the world (including pros) wish they had. He might think he is teaching the powers that be a lesson on the poor money in the sport but history will just look back on the whole thing as a waste of potential immortality in the record books.

WHAT?!?! Here is where a great saying rings through loud and clear. "The older he gets the better he was".
Saying Sigel is in the top 3 all time is not only ludicrous but completely wrong.

When Mike was at his best he was top 3 no doubt about it. Efren had problems beating him, Buddy had problems beating him and Earl I would say had the most success against him. Im not saying he would be there today but I am sure he would still be in the thick of things.

Mike Sigel is my favorite tv commentator. His insight into the game is second to none in my opinion I wish he did more tv.

He is a tremendous pool player who in my opinion pulled the plug on his playing career much too soon even though I understand his reasons for it.

Lest this not sound like a total love fest with the guy, I had the opportunity to see one of his exibitions and he came off as a total jerk. And that was the prevailing sentiment of most people who were in attendance. Nobody had much interest in seeing any more of him and hear him talking any more of himself after that evening.

Yes you can be a great player and NOT have the ego sickness that Sigel seems to have. Nick Varner and Efren Reyes are perfect examples of this!

Just my thoughts
