Another big deal for Matchroom

The snooker "4th major" was actually announced pre-covid and was always on the cards. However, the WPC is certainly big news.

SVB is good but is he good enough to beat everyone for the biggest payday to date?

Lately SVB has been not stringing titles as easily as he used too. Does he still have a chance when that much money is on the line?

Surveys of the youth no longer mention SVB as the top shooter. Now its Jayson or Joshua the most popular male pros on tour.

i'm trying to see just the positives in this, although i strongly dislike that country. the money is massive for the players and they are well worth it. hopefully it will have decent crowd too, it's a fairly big country and has a big filipino population as well.

An excerpt from an internal Matchroom meeting:

“Hey guys, it seems pool is still struggling to shed some of its seedy underworld reputation. What can we do to improve it?”

“Let’s take PIF money and get in bed with the Saudi’s!”

“Perfect!”

Nice to see the massive prize money and great for the players, super sad for the game to be part of the sportswashing trend.

Doubt many slaves get to go to the game.

That is like saying all Americans are part of a minority violent group with a history of discrimination and criminal behavior.

I am a distinguished scholar and professor, I am American but not the American terrorists attack.

The talk was more like

We need to make friends for Saudi Arabians, lets pay off pool players because they have no other option.

Saudis are intensely intelligent, please talk to them about youth development programs. The Middle East is like the stone age when it comes to large scale public youth development programs, where the kids stay respectable. They can't end up like pro ball players in jail and harassing women. Jayson and Fedor are excellent role models as athletes, husbands and for Jayson a father.

For some reason everyone thinks Saudis do not appreciate American culture. Saudis are just like everyone else, closet American fans but due to repression must represent their religious heritage. If a Saudi ever acts like a mainstream American entertainment character, they will be recalled and punished.

🤣 to be fair he never truly stopped playing. He even won an English pool tournament while he apparently wasn't playing.

Could hardly blame him though for "picking up his cue" with them there Saudi payouts. I think he'll do just fine either way anyway.

i wonder who else will come out of retirement..

I think this is horrible news. The worst since Emily took over. This will be like Doha! Boring as hell. No crowds. Quiet as a mouse. And just like Doha, we are stuck for 10 years!

It would have been way better for the sport if it were in the Philippines or Vietnam with 1/4th the prize fund, but roaring crowds and all the pros treated like rock stars.

Big letdown to this fan!

Everyone always bitching about it - No money well this is like seed money for 10 years and then maybe other countries will step up with a little more money until we can support it as an athletic endeavor and not some nice hobby. I am being a little sarcastic.

To put their $10M pool investment over the next 10 years in perspective:

Saudi PIF fund: $700B

Amount they committed to LIV Golf: $2B

So they’re spending 0.0014% of their fund on pool, or 0.5% of what they spent on golf. The same ratio as a person with $1M in the bank spending an extra $1.40 per year.

Moves the needle for pool, though. Hope it leads to even bigger deals.

I agree completely.
