It looks like that is not really a lathe, but is a custom drilling fixture. You could hold balls or other shapes like rings and watches in it and drill into them with the little drill chuck. You could drill from various angles also. So it is more of a horizontal drill press than a lathe. It could be used for some hand turning lathe work by putting a cutting bit in the drill chuck, but I am still guessing it is a drilling fixture that holds items between centers instead of a lathe.

I agree. This isn't a lathe. Some sort of homemade drilling tool with a makeshift xy table that holds the part.

Nail buffer maybe, but not a watch lathe .. this is a watch lathe

(from http://www.lathes.co.uk/watchmaker/)

I agree that it seems like a custom drilling machine for small parts, maybe balls of some kind (based on the concave vice jaws and lever feed).

I don't think it's home-made as it looks to be made from cast iron. Are there any markings or numbers on the castings ? Under the base for example.

It is heavy casting very strong base with rubber feet. It is for sure not home made in my opinion. I can not find any name on the base.

Good job Greg! That is a spitting image of what was posted.

Like Most probably did, I also kept coming up with bowling ball drills, but then I started thinking the thing pictured looked perfect for drilling out gold filled balls in jewelry or those barbells that some people wear. That search lead me to the pearl drilling lathe.
