I have an offer in MN - I currently live in TX. Is there an active pool community there? Any real pool halls with 4.5 by 9 Gold Crowns? Also - houses here are really cheap. I have a 1900 square foot all brick house worth around 140-150K. Can you get something comparable there or is it a lot more. Any help from you guys is appreciated. Thanks!

What Else

I would say it qualifies as 'active'. What else is there to do between October and June while the snow is on the ground? Several good pool halls with weekly tournaments, very high calibur players, etc.

Might check the internet, but I think your housing costs will go up. I am not an expert, but the Minneapolis housing market is fairly competetive and you are looking at probably less than 1900 sq ft at that price. However you will probably have a basement.:D

The pool scene in Minneapolis is pretty good. There are quite a few weekly tournaments as well as a large league following. There are two great pool halls with lots of 9 foot tables. One is north of the city near Coon Rapids called Billiard Street Cafe and then you have another good one South of the city in Burnsville called Shooters. Both have 40 - 50 tables if my memory serves me correctly.

House prices are going to be a little more expensive, I think, than Texas, but not as bad as many metropolitan areas. I can only go by my own experience. When I lived there, I had a 3300 square foot home for about $325K, which is much less expensive than where I currently live.

I lived in Minnesota for about 2 years and it is COLD. But I am sure you already know that. Personally, I know it would take quite a bit of cash to get me to move back.

Let me tell you that Minneapolis has a VERY rich pool scene. In addition to the places mentioned. I can also add Billiard ST Cafe and of course Jimmy's Pro Billiards (owned by pro Jimmy Wetch) among others. Leagues and tournaments almost every night of the week. There is also a private billiard club where $75 gets you 24 hour access and you can play as much as you want. It is designed to have only a certain number of members. They have nine foot tables
(Cosmos now but buying a diamond), 2 Verhoeven billiard tables and there's talk of a snooker table. It's a sweet deal.

As far as housing prices...it does sound like you would pay a little more in MN (maybe $30-$50 thousand more). However, due to rising interest rates, the price of housing is going down not up. You know what...the weather is not as bad as people make it out to be. There are a handful of days in the year that you wonder why you live here. Otherwise, MN is always ranked top three in quality of life in the nation.

Whatever you do, good luck!

Housing and pool

I live in Ramsey which is 25 mi. NW. of Mpls. downtown. I have a 1550 sq. ft. ranch with brick trim in front and vinyl siding. The lot is 184x204. It is worth about 245k. All houses here have basements because a slab on top of the ground would crack due to the ground freezing and thawing. If the basement is finished, it's counted as square footage. I also have a sister in law who lives in Texas 60 mi. East of DFW, and from what I know of Texas housing prices, I think you'll pay at least 50k more and possibly 100k more depending on where you choose to live. As others have said, the pool scene in the local area is very active. I hope your offer is very good.

Now, if someone can tell me where I can find a decent pool hall or non-trashed tables between Brainerd/Baxter and Walker, MN. I'd be grateful. I can't find anything listed in the triangle inside of St. Cloud, Grand Rapids and Duluth in the north.

Thanks.

You will be surprised, imo.

I get there occasionally, and I think Shooters in Burnsville has emerged as the top room. (Several other very good rooms though).

over 20,000 square feet,
has food and alcohol,
has over 60 tables
Many GCs, including four tighter ones near the counter
a dozen or so diamond bar boxes
high-level monday night 9-ball tournament
handicapped and bar box tournaments other nights.

There is always cheap action available, and I mean always. It seems no matter what time I stop in, I'm in a game within twenty minutes.

It's run by friendly, knowledgable people.

It's in Burnsville, south of the city and south of the mall of america.

You'll find all the pool action you want here, friendly, serious and lots of league. Summers slow down a lot, but still action.

I'd agree with the previous posts; I especially like Shooters, also nicely remodeled is Billiard Street (formerly University Billiards, now called Two Stooges!).

I would add Whiskey Rack in Maplewood for a nice small room, more bar and poker action than I like tho. Coliseum Billiards in Maplewood has lots of Cosmos? and a couple Verhoevens, I think a snooker table also. Several others, but you are getting the picture.

Housing is probably more expensive, taxes are higher. Housing gets lots cheaper as you get away from the core of the Cities. I always say the cold weather keeps the riff-raff down. Spring, summer and fall are outstanding. Winters are great if you learn to enjoy them. Overall very good school districts.

Most transplants either love it or hate it, but many (most?) stay for keeps once they move here.

Good luck; PM me if I can help you if you come up for a visit, or if you want any more background.
