That was a very sweet piece of shooting by Oliver Ortman and also, this is the first time I've seen any of his matches before '96, the first time I saw him play was in a tournament shown on a German sports network, "DSF" that was on satelite back then and funnily enough he was playing against Buste in that final, in which Oliver won the macth 11-8?, and so it's great to see matches of Oliver playing at an earlier time and playing Straight Pool to such a high standard really is a treat to watch :)

I think the high run in that was 146 by Oliver, but I'm not 100%, perhaps someone can ellaborate on that or not :)

Another thing I like about this video clip is, it gives another example of how great a sportsman and character that "The Miz" was, as he still was able to smile and enjoy having a laugh, even when he wasn't getting a chance to shoot, which is yet another glimpse of the legend and ambassador of pool, that we all know and miss.

Very well deserved rep points for a great video and also a good video for all the up and coming straight pool players on studying layout patterns from rack to rack.

Wow, nice vidoeo! This is from the tune-up tournament in New York City the weekend before the 1993 US Open 14.1 event. Ortmann would go on to win the US Open 14.1 event.

You are right about Oliver's shooting. He barely hesitates and makes everything. I have an earlier video (1986) of him running about 150 in Germany. Maybe I'll put it up next week.

I got this from Rolando Aravena a few years ago. I thought it was the 1992 US Open that Ortmann won. If so, this must have been from 1992.

I also have other matches from this tournament that I may put up next week:

Ortmann/Sigel; Ortmann/Lehman; Sigel/Massey Jeanette Lee/Vivain Villareal and maybe a few others.

Thank you for that. It means a lot to a younger guy that is trying to learn the game of straight pool the right way and has too few teachers. It is greatly appriciated.

In 1992, Mike Sigel won the US Open 14.1 event. It was the year he ran 150 and out against Zuglan, and Mike went on to beat Dallas West in the final at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC. Oliver won it in 1993. Yes, I'm sure.

There is 1 key thing about straight pool, besides concentration and being able to play patterns... rhythm, that's right, if you watch guys who are running balls like there's nothing to it, you'll notice that they have gotten themselves into a particular rhythm of playing, Mosconi, Caras, Greenleaf, Crane, Cranfield, Butera, The Miz, Sigel, the list goes on and when you watch these great players running balls, they are gotten themselves into a rhythm where they only take a certain amount of time for each shot, unless they really need to take more time, and I have found Straight Pool to be a rhythm game, that take a great deal of focus, concentration, pattern play and also a test of stroke in be able to keep the snowball on a string :)

And of course the display of such a sweet high run of 146 is a perfect example of what I mean by playing in a rhythm, in fact anyone who ever watched Willie Mosconi making a high run of 100+, you'll notice that he too had quite a fast rhythm around the table, sometimes you'd think he was close to running round the table on the odd occasion :)

If this video had been on youtube, it would be getting a top rating everytime :)

You are right about 1992. I have those vids of Sigel winning it, so I should have known. You probably watched it live.

Did Ortmann win it in 1993?

The year he beat Mizerak which is an Accustat tape is 1989 in Chicago.

Ok that was probably one of the best 14.1 video's i've ever seen. I mean Oliver was in the zone.

Also, who thought that shot on the 2ball was FREAKIN AMAZING!!!! it was at about 27mins, and it was after the break shot and he ends up locked up on the 1ball.

Posting on YouTube would have also given iPhone users a chance to view your video. :)

Such a treat to watch. Can't imagine sitting in front of my PC after this. Oliver is such an inspiring player. Now I'll just go to my favourite pool hall and play some.

You tube rejected it and said it was too long.

Fine German precision from the Ortmann Ball Running Machine. "The Man" was definitely on fire that night.

Longevity
That match was almost 15 years ago. Today, Oliver Ortmann is the reigning World Straight Pool Champion. I think he is a threat to repeat in 2008.

I agree with you on that one Dave, as reguards Oliver Ortman, as I have always felt that LOliver was more a straight pool player, than a 9ball player, but in saying that, he plays 9ball very strongly, but he plays straight pool to that little bit higher accuracy and precision, which is what straight pool demands, as well as concentration and pattern knowledge.

It wouldn't suprise me if either Oliver, Ralf or Thorsten were in the finals, shooting against another European player as Straight Pool as always been a most enjoyed cuesport in Central Europe.

I think that I'm the odd one out in Western Europe that has been playing straight pool, as a kid growing up, compared to everyone else was playing snooker and English 8ball :) lol

Thanks DMG Walsh for sharing.

You are welcome, Scott. I have some others I am converting for upload from the same tournament.

Jeannette Lee/Vivian Villareal 14.1
Ortmann/ Herb Lehman 14.1

and an old 1986 Ortmann 150 ball run.

Stay tuned.:D

Probably won't be up until Monday. I'm out of the office tomorrow.
