Moori Tips

Hey Guys - Just got 60 Med. Moori tips in, and put one on my cue. I would definitely say the tip is a Hard on the normal scale. I actually like a Hard tip, but putting these on a customers cue, I will get them back... Anyone else experienced this, or is this just a fluke. I have only installed one from the new batch...

The new Moori's do seem quite a bit firmer than the previous ones. If someone is looking for a softer Moori style tip I now recommend Molavia or even Kamui.

I have found that when they went to the 111's from the 11's that the hardness changed. I normally tell people who used to like the 11 med. to go with the 111 soft.

They have made the tip harder

I think even the soft is too hard. I have switched to the Sniper by Tiger. Gives a softer hit and holds up way better than moori does. The hardness seems very consistent too, no noticeable packing of the leather fibers with use. My customers that used to get the Moori med and softs now love the Snipers. I still use Moori, but I warn the cust that they are harder than the old Moori.

Jim, Are your tips in the new plastic packaging? If so, I had no idea that they had changed.

Yeah they are in the push out tin containers...Anyone want to trade a few Med. for Softs :)

I have a different theory...

The Moori tips of old used to harden up after time. It was like the leather compressed the more you played with them.

The new Moori tips do not do this. If you happen to have some Moori tips from the second and third generations and compare them there are two things that you will notice.

#1 V2 have 11 layers / V3 have only 9

#2 V2 thicker layers / V3 layers are thinner; this makes the overall height of the V2 substantially taller than V3.

Any of the players out there that have tried searching for a *soft* layered tip have probably experienced the same thing... These tips seem to play great for a very short period of time.

I have'nt used any in the breakaway pill looking packages yet, but had noticed the mooris being alittle harder then before. Had some customers mention noticing the difference also. Players usually shooting with mediums going to the slow tips, and the one's prefering fast going to medium. It would seem to be true that they harden up some after play, and being compressed over time, but to Me that part is a given, as that usually takes place to some extent anyhow.

I got some of the new style III's in the push out pill packageing at Valley Forge. The Hards do seem a little harder. Most players in my area prefer the hard moori, I always play with the mediums. I am playing with a Kamui at the moment medium soft and I like it very much. I am playing with an old Joss at the moment with a 314 shaft and I have to say it feels very good. It has kept its shape so far, no need to trim any mushroom sides or reshape since I installed it. I'm gonna order some more soon.

I recently wanted to try a sniper tip badly and had one put on and is it just me or is it noisy, it makes a noticeable click sound any advice to get rid of that

My first thought is that there is a small area between tip and ferrule where the tip does not adhere to the ferrule. Essentially, a tiny air pocket under the tip. This can make for a click sound at impact. No help for it short of replacing the tip.

Sniper tip noise

I glue on Snipers with Gorilla glue. I lightly dampen the sanded surface of the ferrule and the sanded tip base, then glue and clamp in my lathe for at least a few hours. Not production work by any means I know, but always works perfect for me. I try and time it so I do the sniper tip job last and leave it in my lathe all night, then trim it in the morning. I have used super glue of course, but sometimes get that click. Just harder to get a uniform bond I think. I really have confidence in Gorilla glue for any tip job! Also gives me a better hit! Or is it my imagination?
If you carefully cut off that noisey tip from your ferrule with a sharp razor, then sand and re-glue, you still may be able to reuse it. Just make a close fit guide of delrin to slide onto the end of the ferrule and act as a band to keep perfect center of the already trimmed tip onto your ferrule. Gorilla glue will not stick to it in my experience.
