Official released but billiards star remains missing

Advertising An independent councilor of Jhonghe City was released yesterday after paying NT$2 million (US$61,270) in bail for his alleged involvement in a gambling ring and the case of missing billiards star Jennifer Chen (陳純甄).
Chen has gone missing since early this month after allegedly running up huge gambling debts.

Investigators on Friday night arrested Jhonghe City Councilor Yu Hsiang-hsien (游象賢), 41, on suspicion of running an online gambling network and for questioning over Chen's disappearance.

"Prosecutors had applied with the Banciao District Court to detain Yu in the hope of breaking his gambling network, but the court decided to release him on NT$2 million bail," Tseng Chiun-che (曾俊哲), spokesman for the Banciao District Prosecutors' Office, told the press yesterday.

Prosecutors on Friday raided Yu's residence, office, a hostess pub in Taipei County allegedly run by Yu, an underground company that offers online betting on sports games and Chen's Taipei residence.

Tseng said that as prosecutors were probing a bribery case relating to election of the speaker for Jhonghe City Council, they found a number of phone conversations between Yu and Chen about sports betting and Chen's debts.

Prosecutors said that Yu first enticed Chen to gamble on local professional baseball games by saying he knew which and how games were fixed. Chen then started betting on baseball games through online gambling sites run by Yu and other gangsters.

According to local media reports, Chen's addiction to betting on sports such as local baseball games and US Major League baseball games led to gambling debts of more than NT$10 million, which she has been unable to pay.

Prosecutors said that in June, Yu further enticed Chen to bet on World Cup games to win back some money to pay her debts, and even agreed to let Chen pay by check instead of cash.

However, Chen reportedly lost more than NT$10 million in the World Cup games.

The officials added that on July 24, Yu ordered his gangsters to negotiate with Chen and demand that she give up her Taipei residence to cover her gambling debts. Chen soon went missing after the meeting.

Chen is rumored to be hiding out in Hong Kong, trying to evade bookmakers.

The 30-year-old billiards star, nicknamed "Beautiful Baby," came to prominence in the 1990s, claiming the Women's Professional Billiards Association's world number one ranking in March 1999.

Chen won a bronze medal for billiards at the 2001 World Games and a silver medal in last year's World Games.

Wendy, if you ever get in trouble with the mob, my family has a resort in the Pacific. ;)

Q: "Should I let my 12-year-old gamble?"

A: maybe not

I hope she comes out of this ok

Wally,

That's funny... I remember that thread, about 3 years ago.

Gambling creates more problems than it's worth.

Hey Wally,
that thread was in CCB, Billiards digest.com
I will NOT let my 12 year old gamble.
Even if a 12 year old ( somebody`s son) is a world champion I will not gamble with a Minor and if I play and by chance win I will NEVER take the money from a MINOR.

What Jennifer Chen reportedly suffers from is an addiction. There are millions of people who gamble who aren't addicted to it to the point of destroying their lives.

I, as an adult, would not encourage my child to gamble. At Valley Forge there are plenty of fathers who do encourage their kids to gamble and that probably leads to unstable lives for some of them. I guess if you wouldn't let your kids drink whiskey then you shouldn't let them gamble.

So far, these reports have been unconfirmed. A lot of the "facts" are one sided stories or rumors at best. Even in these reports, it was stated most of the "facts" have not been confirmed. The investigation has not completed yet.

During the 10+ years that I have known Jennifer, I have never seen her gamble to the extend of losing everything that she had.

I would think that there must be something else involved.

Jennifer has always been very generous to her friends. She is a very lovable person and a great pool player.

I would like to ask everyone to please kindly withhold from drawing any conclusion until hearing her side of the story.

I can understand that she must be having a very hard time, and I truly wish she knows that there are still a lot of people out there who support her and wish her the very best.

Thank you.

facet58 I had the pleasure of watching your wife compete in Peoria and all I can say is she is one very beautiful and classy lady.

I wish the WPBA had an award for best dressed because she would win it hands-down

I have a close relative who gambles away all treasure he comes upon and it really sickens me so I am biased on this issue.

I, for one, am happy to see the thousands of dollars I pay each year in Soc. Sec. taxes being shoved into slot machines by senior citizens attached to oxygen tanks.

What the hell, if it's their money, let them piss it away as they please.

Gambling, drinking, QVC, it's all shlt.

God bless America

The reports have been confirmed....... Chen indeed gambled heavily on FIFA World Cup, Taiwan baseball games and US MLB baseball games. Because gamble in taiwan is illegal, she not only shames her family and taiwan billiards but also has committed the gamble crime.

( I have more to say, but I have to get back to my poker game now )

Doug, after years of never disagreeing with your , I have to disagree with this. Gambling is at best a neutral thing neither good nor bad. If even one person destroys his life or that of others gambling it is a bad thing. Not so much that I think there should be legislation against it, but nevertheless a bad thing.
Steve.

BTW, I play poker $1.00 ante max, that I consider a neutral thing.

The onus is on her to get her story out, now that various reports are possibly tarnishing her image. If she does not have a problem then I would expect her to be quick about setting things straight. If she does not come clean very soon, then people will believe the reports. We'll see.

I had a friend from Greece...She knew a couple from Greece who owned 2 deli stores here in Calif....Her friends went to Las Vegas with other friends who introduced them to gambling. Her friend lost $25,000 on that first ever trip. He came home and said he was going back to Vegas to win back his money. He no longer owns 2 deli's.....
Some people get into a trap and can't get out. Some don't and some never get started. Who knows who does what and why....
I know serval people who are divorced because of gambling. I guess if you have self control and disipline it is O.K....If not, it can be a nightmare....
Years ago I had no control either, but my wife stayed with me and I got over it. Now I gamble once a year while in Vegas for BCA and thats it.....We will celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary Nov. 9th.....
Some are not so lucky....
John Daly the golfer took 2nd at a major tournament and got $750,000. He jumped on a plane and went straight o Vegas, played $5,000 slots and lost $1.6 million dollars. Charles Barkley, commenting on John Daly said, "so what. I lost $10 million betting on sports events".....

There is a big difference between gambling, and gaming. What occurs in LV, in any State lotto, or any other state or federally sanctioned track, Casino, Bingo Parlor, OTB, IS NOT GAMBLING, it's giving money away at a mathematically pre-determined rate, i.e. GAMING.

I live in WI, and recently a gaming law was liberally interpreted by the governor, which paved the way for Texas Hold-em at the local casinos, then the gaming commission got in there and banned it again, because it's a game where an individual has a chance to win, because they are not playing the house.

Oh! ...and Jennifer Chen is over at my house trying to hustle my dog. She was giving him the 7 and getting destroyed though. Never trust a German Shepphard mutt with an eye patch.

I don't know about anyone else but this thread brightens my day.(not the part about Chen missing) And to think I have been upset for running a debt for a measly few hundred bucks on poker sites. I guess I'm not that bad after all. Thanks guys.:)
