Efren playing Michael Feliciano a set for about 49,500 pesos. ($1,132). Efren is getting spotted 2 games on the wire racing to 22. Micheal who? spotting efren? wth?

Makes you really wonder just how many guys are over there that could flat rob most of the regional events in the USA.

Lol, and that is why they invented call-shot 10-ball. Thanks for sharing.

The local 9-ball tournament in which I participate every so often is call shot only on the 9 ball. I have to say that I really prefer that.

I liked the color commentary the best. I could listen to the roosters and dogs all day.

Could you imagine Earl playing there. He would strangle that rooster. People walking around, talking, the sun glaring in everywhere. No wonder they are so hard to beat. They are completely un-sharkable. They have incredible focus.

They are like old American road players that could play anywhere and nothing bothered them. Many of todays players if it is not like a library or they can't play. Those guys in the video are not looking for excuses, they just play.

Can you imagine playing in those conditions? They're essentially playing outside under a pavilion-like structure........oh, the humidity:eek: and worn cloth:eek:.

Just think what it would be like the first time one of those monsters came to Vegas and played on a Diamond with brand new cloth, under the light (TV table), AC, and no humidity.

The rooster constantly crowing in the immediate background -- and the occasional chirping of chicks (baby chickens) close by -- made me LOL.

Old McEfren had a farm...:p

Seriously, if that ain't a boiling cauldron to test your mental game, I don't know what is.

Regarding the conditions, I've played a fair bit of action matches is S.E Asia. Most in pool rooms inside, but many times the doors are wide open with no AC.

The tables are different than we are used too, particularly the cloth. For sure you will be playing what will you feel is less than your best and you will be working harder to do it.

People love to gather around and watch, standing closely to the table and sometimes touching or leaning on it. You can feel them over your shoulder, and these are real money matches I'm talking. But this is how they roll there and it's not meant as any disrespect or seen as bad etiquette.

So when you watch these videos you will see what would appear to be some missed balls and errors you may not expect out of what people are referring to as top PI money players, and may think to under rate them. I can't speak for sure about any of these unknowns as I've never played any of them or seen them play in person. I can say that what you are seeing of their speed is at least 2 balls under(and maybe more) of what would you see on equipment that you are used too.

The point is, those conditions are brutal, especially under pressure.

It's good till you get someone that goes for a 9 ball combo, totally misses the 9, ball kicks off the rail, into the back of the 9, sending the 9 into the path of the cueball that is rolling forward due to follow the guy put on the thing, the cueball hits the 9 into the pocket the guy called. Win for him on a totally missed shot.

Don't know how cool that it, it's probably in the middle of the day when they should be in school instead of wandering the streets, probably without any adults. While I'm all for kids playing pool (I bring my son to every Jr Nationals tournament and other tournaments all over the place), a gambling arena like that is not the proper place for them.

Actually, at least the first video, it looks like later in the day, the sun looks to be coming in from the side. Or maybe it's early hehe.

What is it that attracts the young Filipinos to the game? The gambling.

What is it that attracts the Joey Grey's, Justin Bergman's, Skylar's, Chips, etc? The gambling.

When The Color Of Money came out and the interest rose, why was that? The gambling.

Imo the gambling aspect of pool is very similar to the fighting aspect of martial arts. People can say that they started Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, for example, because it is a fun sport or because it teaches great personal attributes or even because they want to learn self defense, and to an extent all of those things are true and keeps them in the game but the truth is the real reason people start is because they want to learn how to fight, plain and simple. Self defense is much easier and effective if you buy a stun gun but for ego reasons people want to know how to fight. When the ufc first came out bjj schools, rose in popularity and once muay thai, boxing, and wrestling were proven effective those schools too rose even when the sport itself was seen as a barbaric spectacle. Zuffa figured out how to covertly highlight the fighting while giving it the image of a sport for mainstream acceptance but it is still the fighting that kids want to learn and for the same reasons.

Imo the gambling aspect can be marketed with young adults such as Joey and Justin and excite a younger audience to the game. The trick is to do it in a way that is acceptable. Display the GAMBLING in a cool way with YOUNG ADULTS and viewers will be attracted. It is the gambling that attracted today's players and it is the gambling that can attract many more for tomorrow if it is done correctly.

I'm not saying to get rid of the sport aspect of pool. I'm just saying that is not what is going to draw in the most participants imo. I think trying to hide the gambling aspect of the game is a mistake. Just present it right.
