This is actually well documented and I'm sure you can find a more detailed story than what I'm about to tell you.
A number of years back, Jean Balukas was playing in a tournament and was fined for a comment she made during her match. It apparently sharked her opponent. Jean objected to the fact that the committee that levied the fine consisted of the same players she competed against and refused to pay. As a result, she was not allowed to compete until the fine was paid so she retired.
Jean has further explained her view saying she really had little interest in going on the road and competing. She's since still maintained interest in the game, running Hall Of Fame Billiards in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and hosting a number of local tournaments. She's also a must-see destination for many members of the WPBA and will show up to watch all major events in the region.
She still plays in many of her in-house tournaments, gives instruction to her regulars and, as far as I know, still maintains a solid game.
