Mosconi Cup -- Career Records of Everyone Who Has Ever Played on Either Team

Lee and Villarreal are the only two players with perfect career records in the Mosconi Cup. (Of course, they only played that one year, 1994).

An undefeated record in a single event has been achieved 14 other times:

  • Strickland in 1997 (5-0), 2001 (3-0), and 2005 (4-0)

    Jones in 2001 (3-0)

    Williams in 2001 (3-0)

    Deuel in 2001 (3-0)

    Morris in 2004 (5-0) and 2005 (4-0)

    Archer in 2012 (6-0)

    Souquet in 2008 (6-0) and 2013 (4-0)

    Feijen in 2013 (5-0) and 2016 (4-0)

    Ouschan in 2016 (5-0)

So, in total, a player has gone without a loss in a year's event just 16 times out of a total of 264 player appearances (6.1%).

I think you'll find that Joshua Filler also has a perfect 5-0 record (albeit in his only appearance)

Hard to figure why the Europeans passed on Albin Ouschan with an 8-1-2 career Mosconi Cup record, over the last 2 years, the only 2 years he was on the team. I assume they must use a points system to qualify, otherwise there is no way Vandenberg or Alcaide, both with losing career Mosconi Cup records, would have made it ahead of him.

just thought of the possibility that albin was maybe involved in the decission and decided to prepare for world 9 ball this week....... any chance?

He didn't qualify in simple terms and they were spoilt for choice with regards to the captain's picks!

yeah ofc! but regarding albins record in mosconi it seems very odd to me that he didnt get the 2nd wc, as reigning worldchamp on top!

Yes, the post you quoted (#9) was prior to the 2017 Cup. I updated that post after the 2017 Cup with post #17.

The Van Boening Era in the Mosconi Cup -- Team USA Player Records

Here is a comparison of Shane Van Boening's Cup record with the records during the past 11 years of everyone else (15 other players) who has played on the team with Shane (2007-2017). Methods A and B are defined in post #1.

In other words, 7 of the 15 teammates Shane has had on Cup teams also played on the team in one or more years prior to Shane's first year. The following stats for those 7 players (Archer, Morris, Deuel, Strickland, Jones, Putnam, and Schmidt) exclude those years prior to 2007 (and, so, are different from what is shown in post #1 above). The stats for the 8 teammates of Shane who have never played without him are the same as in post #1 above.

• Shane Van Boening (11 yrs. -- 2007-2017) ..... 11-16 s, 11-17 d, 4-7 t, 26-40 total A (39%), 17.3-25.9 total B (40%)

• Johnny Archer (7 years -- 2007-2013) ..... 6-4 s, 12-10 d, 3-4 t, 21-18 total A (winning percentage of 54%), 12.6-9.8 total B (winning percentage of 56%)

• Justin Bergman (3 yrs. -- 2014-2016) ..... 1-5 s, 4-3 d, 1-2 t, 6-10 total A (38%), 3.2-6.9 total B (32%)

• Earl Strickland (3 yrs. -- 2007-2008, 2013) ..... 2-3 s, 4-4 d, 1-2 t, 7-9 total A (44%), 4.2-5.4 total B (44%)

• Skyler Woodward (3 yrs. -- 2015-2017) ..... 0-4 s, 3-6 d, 1-2 t, 4-12 total A (25%), 1.7-7.4 total B (19%)

• Oscar Dominguez (2 yr. -- 2009, 2017) ..... 0-3 s, 3-3 d, 1-1 t, 4-7 total A (36%), 1.7-4.7 total B (27%)

• Justin Hall (1 yr. -- 2014) ..... 1-0 s, 2-1 d, 0-1 t, 3-2 total A (60%), 2.0-0.7 total B (74%)

• Jeremy Jones (1 yr. -- 2008) ..... 0-2 s, 1-2 d, 0-1 t, 1-5 total A (17%), 0.5-3.2 total B (14%)

• Shawn Putnam (1 yr. -- 2011) ..... 0-1 s, 2-1 d, 0-1 t, 2-3 total A (40%), 1.0-1.7 total B (37%)

• John Schmidt (1 yr. -- 2014) ..... 1-0 s, 0-3 d, 0-1 t, 1-4 total A (20%), 1.0-1.7 total B (37%)

• Brandon Shuff (1 yr. -- 2012) ..... 0-3 s, 1-2 d, 1-0 t, 2-5 total A (29%), 0.7-4.0 total B (15%)

• Billy Thorpe (1 yr. -- 2017) ..... 1-0 s, 1-2 d, 0-1 t, 2-3 total A (40%), 1.5-1.2 total B (56%)
____________________________________________________________________________________________

• Total all 16 players (11 years -- 2007-2017) ..... 33-64 s, 64-92 d, 20-35 t, 117-191 total A (38%), 69-117 total B (37%)

Total excluding Shane Van Boening ..... 22-48 s, 53-75 d , 16-28 t, 91-151 total A (38%), 51.7-91.1 total B (36%)

Shane Van Boening ..... 11-16 s, 11-17 d, 4-7 t, 26-40 total A (39%), 17.3-25.9 total B (40%)
____________________________________________________________________________________________

The above stats for players other than Shane include the doubles and teams matches they played with him. If we exclude those and compare the matches in which Shane played vs. those in which he did not play, we have:

Shane's record (Method A)
singles -- 11-16 (41%)
doubles -- 11-17 (39%)

Team USA's match record (Method A) excluding Shane's matches:
singles -- 22-48 (31%)
doubles -- 21-29 (42%)

So Shane has done better in singles (41% vs. 31%) than his teammates and slightly worse in doubles (39% vs. 42%). And, on the contribution method (Method B), as shown above, Shane's winning percentage is 40% vs. his teammates' 36%.

Great stuff, thanks AtLarge
IMHO Method B using fractions instead of full point for doubles, team is more "accurate". The value to a player of singles win is obviously more than value of double win so assigning half point for doubles is more appropriate.
Obviously to have better chance of winning, players with more than 50% record should be selected.
Using Method B, if active players with more than 50% records are selected for team, the team would include :
Johnny Archer 56%
Justin Hall 74%
Billy Thorpe 56%

:D:D

Thanks for a great post / resource At Large!

Update of Post #9 to include results from the 2017 Cup:

Lee, Villarreal, and Filler, all with 5-0 records, are the only players with perfect career records in the Mosconi Cup. (Of course, they only played one year).

An undefeated record in a single event has been achieved 14 other times:

  • Strickland in 1997 (5-0), 2001 (3-0), and 2005 (4-0)

    Jones in 2001 (3-0)

    Williams in 2001 (3-0)

    Deuel in 2001 (3-0)

    Morris in 2004 (5-0) and 2005 (4-0)

    Archer in 2012 (6-0)

    Souquet in 2008 (6-0) and 2013 (4-0)

    Feijen in 2013 (5-0) and 2016 (4-0)

    Ouschan in 2016 (5-0)

So, in total, a player has gone without a loss in a year's event just 17 times out of a total of 274 player appearances (6.2%).
^^^^^^^^ Looks like we are dominating in 1 category!!!!!!
USA! USA! USA! :grin-square:

This year, if Europe had Appleton, Melling and Oushan instead of Feijen, Kaci and Kazadis, they would have won easily

Shaw
Filler
Appleton
Melling
Oushan

to me is the Europe dream team

Hard to figure why the Europeans passed on Albin Ouschan with an 8-1-2 career Mosconi Cup record, over the last 2 years, the only 2 years he was on the team. I assume they must use a points system to qualify, otherwise there is no way Vandenberg or Alcaide, both with losing career Mosconi Cup records, would have made it ahead of him.
No question that for the European team, Filler and Ouschan should both have been no-brainer captain's picks the past 2 years, even if they didn't qualify through their point system. They have proven themselves as virtually automatic locks to be on their team just as Shane and Skylar are for the US team. However, Filler was not on the 2018 team and Ouschan was not on this year's team - very strange.

I think Gorst was the pick....Ouschan has sunk to #25 Fargo
I think Feijen was picked, (only one point worse than Gorst) because of his four MVPs...
...which is understandable.

..thinking Gorst gets on the team next year

Appleton's game has come down a few notches. I'd put Kaci or Gorst in over him.

I used to play Viv some 3-ball around 1992-93. Funny, I must've missed her thank you note for tuning her up for her 1994 MC performance .

pj <- how quickly they forget
